1. Qiroah pak Yaser 1
Qiroah (recitation of the Quran) is a common practice in Islamic communities. While officially not belonging to music, Arab reciters make use of various Maqamat (specific tonal material). When Islam arrived in Java, Javanese adapted the practice of Qiroah by using the Javanese pelog scale. Nowadays this tradition has almost become extinct, replaced by common imitations of the original Arab style. I made this recording in 2020 with Muhammad Yaser Arafat (pak Yaser), an Indonesian scholar who learned the old-school Qiroah Jawa by himself and who even wrote his thesis about this. Thanks to Gerrit who put my attention on the rare Bantul azan in pelog, thanks to Rusdyha who helped me finding Bapak Yaser and, of course, thanks to Pak Yaser himself.

2. Gamelan Monggang
Gamelan Monggang is an archaic set of instruments from around the 13. century. The tuning of the instruments consist of only 3 pitches and there is only one composition which can be played on the set. It is only played at the most important rituals in the central Javanese palaces like Royal weddings, funerals: or Islamic festivals (for instance the celebrations of Ramadan). This recording is from the CD “Original Javanese Music: Gamelan Music, Vol. 3 (Gending-Gending Klenengan)”, an Indonesian production.

3. Macapat 1 (Maskumambang Pelog Nem)
Macapt is a classical Javanese form, basically the recitation of a poem. While a Macapt doesn’t have an obvious Islamic function, Pak Yaser explicitly mentioned Macapt as a strong influence on the Javanese style Qiroah. This recording is from the CD “Gamelan of Central Java - 18 Solo Music”, recorded by John Noise Manis.

4. Gamelan Sekaten 1 (Gendhing Glendheng)
Gamelan Sekaten are also archaic Gamelans. They have been created around the 16/17 century. Javanese only play on them once per year: at the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. This recording is from the CD “Gamelan of Central Java - 26 Sekaten Continuum Surakarta”, played by musicians from Keraton (palace) Surakarta, recorded by John Noise Manis.

6. Gendhing bonangan Dhenggung Turulare pelog nem
A “Gending bonangan” is a typical form in Javanese Gamelan music which can be played on mostly any modern Javanese common-practice Gamelan. They belong to the “loud” style of the repertoire which omits all soft instruments. While not directly having a connection to Islam, their relationship towards Gamelan Sekaten could be understood as the inverse relationship Qiroah Java - Macapt, since they are basically a modern version of the old loud style Gamelan Sekaten. This recording is from the CD “Gamelan of Central Java - 33 Court Music Gems”, played by musicians from ISI (conservatory) Surakarta, recorded by John Noise Manis.

All notes in this music are bits and snippets taken from iconic classical pieces, played "wrong". These pieces have been played around the world over and over again, while volumes of music, equal in quality, remain widely unknown. Almost everyone has heard these works at some point, even though their origin and purpose seem to have become less important. The idea of this piece is to identify these wrongly played bits and snipptes with the spinning of the humming tops. These mere toys have no purpose or progression in what they do, yet it appears tempting to let them spin again and again.

MND TRCK's latest release is a paradigmatic example of what the Bochum-based ensemble is currently up to. The piece appears to be a manifesto-like blue print of the musical and formational shifts the band is currently undergoing. 
Founded as a trio in early 2016, MND TRCK codified as a core principle to explicitly encourage featuring guest artists in their shows and on recordings. Thus, vocalists and instrumentalists alike regularly found their spot on the firm basis modeled by the archetypical rhythm section of keyboards, bass and drums. The fragments of their collaborator's artistic fingerprints, injected in the course of countless stick-breaking and heart-taking encounters, have become a vital part of the trio's DNA and defined its distinct sound. 
Even in 2017, the appreciation of such inspiring dialogues has not faded. Yet their ephemeral character left the desire for establishing opportunities for more continuous conversations unsatisfied. This longing for breadth and depth, for characterful enrichment of the ensemble's iconic idiolect, its playful solidity can be vividly perceived in MND TRCK's latest studio album. TRANSLUCENCE, thus, also marks the dawn of a new period: It has been clearly conceived an invitation for others to board and join in the discussion. 
Already while putting the final touches to the record, the premises of its immanent prophecy fulfilled. With trombonists Maximilian Wehner and Kiril Zafirov and pluripotent percussionist Philipp Bracht the band doubled, from a tight trio to a space-consuming sextet.
