Gonçalo Salgado - better known by the alias Lake Haze - knows a thing or two about world building. The Lisbon don’s third Shall Not Fade release sees him experiment with a sound that differs from his last: an ode to the retro, computer-love aesthetic of chiptune and video game music. 

Whilst tracks like the uptempo ‘Xyleac’ and ‘Bbyncole’ centre on playfulness and fun, others deftly tease out the style’s potential to be emotive. ‘Diluspth’ and ‘So45101 - 51 - 16’ are stripped-back with the latter adding a shuffly drum pattern which brings a certain groove. Earworm melodies and synth-laden arpeggios drive ‘Flhewn(303)irio’ and ‘Dith6xove’ but ‘Shores Of Eternal Life’ and ‘Blue Suzuki’ are blissfully amorphous, letting ambience do the talking.

John Barera (Allergy Season, Dolly, Sorry Records) joins the roster of Will Buck’s Off Track Recordings this September with his four-track ‘Message In The Air’ EP. New York based producer, DJ and Cross Street Music label boss John Barera has long been a highly acclaimed artist in the world of underground House and Techno. In 2022, he scored his first film as well, Marc17 in the House. His material has graced many taste making labels, while his DJ sets have taken him to hotspots like Panorama Bar, Fabric, Smart Bar, Razzmatazz, Floyd, Video Club, Tangent Gallery and many more. Here we see Barera, a prolific collaborator who drops solo albums as well, delivering his first solo ep in six years via the fledgling Off Track Recordings. On this record, Barera steps up with his trademark raw house, now infused with live instruments or even a vocal across four soul drenched house cuts.

Acid house label Chicago Bee will release the compilation ‘Home Listening - Acid & House’ on 7 November, on vinyl and digitally. 

The vision for the ‘Home Listening' compilation album was to create a collection of tracks that complement each other and are fitting for repeated home listening. Being somewhat of a conceptual experiment, all the artists on the album were asked to imagine fusing Acid and House with the Virtualsex LP which was released on Buzz in 1993. A 303 sound would be welcomed but not essential with an emphasis on soulful emotion and melody.   

Some of the artists are people who label boss Mark Churcher (aka A-Eno-Acid) has struck up a relationship with since starting Chicago Bee and some targeted deliberately as Mark thought they would be able to hit the brief. The project threw up many interesting results with some artists drifting outside of their normal comfort zone! Artists featured include Derek Carr, Type 303, Fear-E, Forgotten Corner, and label boss A-Eno-Acid. 

From Finland, Dan Kaipio has become a versatile and prolific artist over recent years and this is his second appearance on Chicago Bee. With EP releases on the popular I Love Acid and Downfall Recordings labels to his name, he’s no mug. He nails a vintage acid sound with his track, ’Stairway To Jupiter’.

​Fresh from the recent Bandcamp feature on his own brand of dancefloor-ready modern boogie, Seungyoung Lee (aka Mogwaa) arrives back on MM Discos with his - and our - first full length exercise. With six tracks per side of 80s influenced synth and bossa badness, ‘Hazy Dreams’ is an exercise in simplicity, and more proof of the ever-expanding musical horizons of one of the scene’s most virtuosic instrumentalists.
Pairing a sensitivity to the construction of ambient, funk, bossa and cassette-tape 80s experiments with his own cinematic subtlety, ‘Hazy Dreams’ takes a gentle, minimalistic approach, crafting its own escapist world that offers a welcome diversion from the steady flow of busy balearica and downtempo.
Opening track ‘Full Bloom’ paints a picture of midsummer at dawn, some clear-skied island where lush vegetation climbs through hibiscus gardens. ‘Nacimiento’ is an AOR/bossa crossover evoking West Coast yachting in full afternoon, and A3, ‘Soothing’, adds a touch of wistfulness with reverb-doused guitars over meandering bass motifs.
The easy kick-and-snare combo of ‘Levitation’ sets the scene for a drum machine love affair, unrequited love on the rocks, and ‘Flashback’ plays with short delay trails and off-kilter melodic sequences, where you feel the soft presence of the nebula approaching at the break of day. Closing out the A-side, ‘Dispatching’ reaches out even further into the imagined cosmos of Mogwaa’s picture-perfect world, portraying an ambience at dusk, observing, calmy, as puffed-up pink clouds melt into the evening canvas.
On the other side, Mogwaa explores quiet corners with ‘Illusions’, a slow meditation on the nature of simple presence, and ‘Echoes of You’, a stream of subdued brush strokes that crescendo into higher frequencies on gently undulating pads. B3, ‘Moondance’, ups the tempo and recalls classic Mogwaa with its sideways shuffle and starry melodic refrain, pivoting through folk-dance moods and surprising chord changes.
Nearing the end of the album, ‘Footprints’ wades through tall grass in search of altered states, infinite and hypnotic, changing course only to crouch down and study the landscape, and B5, ‘It always comes and goes’, pictures the to-and-fro of jetstreams and comets in the blinding midday sky. Finally we have the closing credits of ‘Swingin’ that looks off into the horizon, jaunty and exalted, a guitar-led tribute to an easy-going world, and ultimately mindful of the power of dreams.
We’re humbled to have such a special record for our first full-length release on the label. Limited stock - don’t sleep on this
