A word about the players and the songs. I could rave about each an every player on each and every song but let’s break it down a bit. Joe Kimsey brings 57 Blue home like he’s driving the car himself. Masterful rolls and unlimited expressive playing throughout. On the traditional, Cold Rain & Snow, Matt Mundy’s mandolin echos in the canyon about as lonely and high as you can be – every solo in this song is incredible as is Fay Salvaras’s voice. In my love note to natural beauty, Jacks River Run, Leah Calvert lays down an Appalachian fiddle drone that conjures the smell of riverbank eucalyptus–Leah’s uniquely beautiful sense of melody along with Mark Mundy’s dobro make the song. Lonely Star – a song about the best player I’ve ever known – I tried to write in his style, which is difficult because he is a genius - but what can I say, these boys can pick! – and did Lonely Star the “hot lick” justice it deserves. On the traditional, Dreadful Wind & Rain Fay Salvaras lends her beautifully lush North Georgia voice to a centuries old Irish folk song. Her performance and the rest of these bluegrass masters makes for a truly enjoyable listen and a worthy contribution to the canon. Mountain Days is a little love note to the place I feel the most at home, in the Cohutta Wilderness with all my best friends. That brings us to Simple Things which is about just that – getting out to your favorite place and having a good old time with your favorite people – and appropriately enough one of my friends, the masterful percussionist Jose Rivera lays down the perfect groove for doing just that - enjoying the Simple Things. Go to Sleep is a simple lullaby. I wrote it for my son, Harry. The world needs more lullabies.
