Murder Ballads Mvt. I - Little Sir Hugh

My contribution to the Hoodlebug Brass's Christmas repertoire!

Bring A Torch, Jeannette, Isabella

First in a series of murder ballads (not a suite), this is my interpretation of Britain's "Little Sir Hugh" (Child Ballad #155), revised from an earlier setting of mine, premiered in May of 2011.  The piece is given a medieval feel by its use of the five instruments in certain doublings or consorts and its shifting meter, but is given a more modern rhythmic sensibility.  Performed by the Rowan University Faculty Brass Quintet on April 26, 2013.

Little Sir Hugh

Mark Dundore is an emerging composer in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area. His work includes repertoire in both the vocal and instrumental media, and he is always looking for new challenges and opportunities in the field. Mark is also active as a singer and instrumentalist with several groups in the area, and has contributed his talents to such performing ensembles as the West Shore Symphony, Greater Harrisburg Concert Band, Alumni Chorale of Lebanon Valley College, Messiah College Wind Ensemble, Covered Bridge Brass, and Harrisburg Singers.

Mark is a 2011 Cum Laude graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, with a B.A. in Music Theory and Composition. He studied composition with Daniel Perlongo and David Martynuik, piano with Judith Radell and Anastasia Antonacos, tuba with Zach Collins, and conducting with Jack Stamp, Jason Worzbyt, and Christopher Thomas. Composers in whose master classes Mark has participated include Eric Ewazen, Frank Ticheli, Drew Hemenger, Stephen Michael Newby, Oystein Baadsvik, and Jim Self. He has premiered works for both vocal and instrumental ensembles, and holds memberships in several professional organizations. In addition, Mark is a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.
