Linkin Park’s One More Light is the first original cover in my Mental Health Awareness project. Through music I aim to encourage people to talk about mental illness and break the stigma that surrounds this invisible problem.

Chester Bennington, who performed One More Light, tragically took his own life on July 20th , 2017. The song was part of the last album, of the same name, that Chester created with Linkin Park, recorded in 2016 and released just 2 months before Chester died. Following his death, an official video of Chester performing the track was released in September 2017, and the single in October of the same year. The music video was nominated for Best Rock Video at the 2018 MTV awards. Chester had a 3-octave tenor vocal range and was considered by many to be the ‘voice of a generation’, giving people the feeling that he understood them and was also open about his own mental health issues.

Written by Mike Shinoda, co-founder of Linkin Park, and Eg White, a British singer/songwriter and producer, the song was written with the intention of showing those who have lost someone dear that others care and the importance of connecting with others at times of loss.

I chose this song to begin my mental health project as at the time Coronavirus was making a significant impact on the lives of people around the world through death and isolation and impacting mental well-being. I felt the lyrics to be just as appropriate to those who had suffered physical loss
or were struggling with their mental health, as a way of encouraging people to reach out and connect with each other for support and solace. 

One More Light is the ‘tribute’ song for Chester. After his death his wife set up a campaign ‘320 Changes Direction’ to honour her husband and to help break the stigma surrounding mental illness. A great musical talent, lost too soon.
