1990, or was it 1991?  The first hour of this is probably more akin to what was played at the Warehouse in Leeds in those years, but the mix could have just as easily been called Ricky's or the Gallery or named after any other club in the North of England for that matter.  The Warehouse was the first club I went to though and its a tribute to how blown away I was as soon as I'd blagged my way in saying I'd lost my mates, even though I looked about 12.  Those nights, and Boy Wonder especially were very special indeed.

Andrew Souter classic house mix 1989-91

Spin Inn, Eastern Bloc, The Mix Factory, Da Intalex...just some of the Manchester musical institutions and outfits that Mark XTC has been involved with in his now twenty five year career across records shops, clubs and early rave culture.

Playing across hip hop, classic house and also well known as a proponent of Drum and Bass / Jungle throughout his career Mark is a hugely versatile DJ and his Hacienda Tribute mix, published now on this site and soundcloud, sees him take to three decks and CD-J’s in putting it together.

Showcasing the skills throughout, taking accapellas, additional beats and put his own spins on the format, “Always There” and “Dirty Cash” knock out over classics such as Jam The Dance from the outset. A tribute to the recently passed Mark Bell with an airing of “LFO” as Mark throws in the better known tunes such as “Voodoo Ray”, “Promised Land” against US underground  such as Corina’s  “Temptation” 

With extended mixing a feature of the mix, and Mark laying his own markers, scratching in and out, from “French Kiss”, “Higher States Of Consciousness” and the Sasha remix of Better Days, Mark expertly blends the tracks in a set that pulls no punches.

The rarely heard dub of My Friend Sam featuring Viola Willis kicks off the final section of the mix as B Sides Volme II, ”Casanova” and “The Shaker Song” all come together as rare hip hop cut The Doc’s “Portrait Of A Masterpiece” and an untouched “Strings Of Life”  bring Mark’s exhilarating hour to a close.

Here's a mix of my set from N.Y.E.  I played for a few hours in the 1991 Rave Cave before Shades Of Rhythm & Micky Finn.
The set starts off with some classic old skool piano house and it builds throughout towards the Ravier side of things as the night went on.. N-joy .x

On Bank Holiday 2/5/04 I played my very first retro house event for Reckless @ Satchmos, Stoke-On-Trent. This was the first time I had properly looked back to the amazing tracks that shaped my club DJ career at Shelleys,Introspective, Freetown & early Golden days. A two hour set was recorded live on vinyl on 3 decks and 100 CD packs were sold after the event. This is the first time it was been available as a digital file.

Mark Holliday - Back to '89

I’ve decided to remake my first ever and probably most popular house mix in glorious hi-fidelity sound originally recorded over 25 years ago. Many may regard this as the golden age of early 90’s house between 91-93 and no doubt you’ll recognise many tunes taken from various sets including Sasha at Universe - Pleasure Planet, probably the most popular house mix amongst UK ravers to date! For me, this is where my house journey began and I still draw a lot of influence from the early 90’s.

DJing for over 30 years, Mark’s held many residences at clubs such as Ricky's, The Warehouse, The Gallery, Highflyers, Soak, Kaos, Ark and the Glasshouse, playing alongside the likes of Sasha, Dave Seaman, Graeme Park, Allister Whitehead, Jon Pleased Wimmin, Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, K-Klass and has graced the decks at some of the UK’s key clubs such as Pacha, Gatecrasher & Tall Trees. 

In recent years Mark has made regular appearances at a variety of club nights across the north of England at LTD Addiction, Shine, House Arrest, Love to Be and Reborn. He’s also taken centre stage at Leeds Pride showcasing his skills to more that 20’000 revellers. Mark has also hosted his own internet radio shows booking some of the worlds biggest DJs including Kurd Maverick, Dave Seaman, Utah Saints, Disfunktion, Dan Castro, Prok and Fitch, Hard Rock Sofa and Mason. 

Mark continues to perform at various events and currently holds residency Revisited at the Leeds Warehouse mixing up a cocktail of uplifting, hands-in- the-air house music alongside other DJ legends.
