When I moved to the USA from Scotland back in the 1980s, I'd never owned a car.  Just motorcycles.  So I bought the largest car I could find - a 1974 Pontiac LeMans Sports Coupe.  Man, I loved that car.  The song describes how sometimes the simplest of pleasures get eroded over time, and we forget how to enjoy the simple things.

My mother died during Covid, and I couldn't get back to Scotland for the funeral.  We had a zoom funeral instead which, because of the time difference, ended at 7am in the morning in Michigan.  After the funeral, I walked out onto the Petoskey breakwater to get some air.  It was what we in Scotland call a "soft morning" with only a hint of breeze and the air like a warm caress.  I've tried to capture the feeling of that morning in this song.

How do we feel about ourselves, and what makes us truly happy? Many of us wrestle with these questions (I know I do). This song presents a few thoughts on self-improvement, grasping at the next new thing, and simple gratitude for what we already have.

For many years, my mother lived out in the country, in a converted farm cottage in a tiny farming village in Scotland.  The land was owned by an "absentee landlord" but leased in the long-term to a local farmer and his family.  The owner decided to sell, and the local farmer put in his best offer.  Instead, the owner sold the land to a foreign multinational, putting the farmer and his family out of business and out of their home.  Tragically, the farmer took his own life.  This devastating story inspired the song, "Impossible to Count the Cost" which explores land use and land ownership in Scotland (and elsewhere).
