Student social, emotional, and behavior development will be a critical consideration for teachers returning to physical classrooms in the fall. We read a national study examining the various methods schools use to screen students for social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Universal screening is still rare in the US, but its impacts are considerable.

Later, we discuss the emotional display rules for teachers. How are we expected to show, or not show, our emotions with students or colleagues? We read how the rules are not the same for everyone.

Today my guest is Jonathan McGuire, a Data Analyst & Evaluator. In this episode, we explore data and statistics and how these are typically gathered, analysed, evaluated, and communicated across various fields including psychology, public health, business and education. Jonathan shares some of this early study and research activities -  such as those involving honey bees, their foraging behaviour and how they learn - through to later research in human moral cognition, or how people make moral decisions and judgements. Jonathan offers insights into a range of professional practices and approaches in the field of data analytics, such as statistical models, hierarchical linear modelling, business intelligence, the scientist/practitioner model, adaptive clinical trials and structured feedback loops. Jonathan talks us through some of his evaluation activities and how his team investigated a “compressed curriculum” for high school students, evaluating its impact on Higher School Certificate (HSC) results and a range of other more subjective areas such as teacher and student beliefs and attitudes, and other school-level effects. Mindful that data is often about real people and situations, such as data sets related to mental health and suicide, Jonathan offers insights into some of the moral and ethical elements. We explore some of the social responsibilities associated with data, and how these might be managed by generally treating the data and its communication with appropriate care and respect. For example: the increasing acknowledgement and use of collaboration and conversations with relevant research stakeholders. We explore how ethics relates to new and emerging technology such artificial intelligence and machine learning, algorithms and bias, and the importance of bringing members of the public along on the journey, so they get to realise the value of the data as well.

Today my guest is Tom Mahoney, a Teacher and Educational Researcher. In this episode, we explore Tom’s diverse teaching roles related to both Mathematics and Psychology. Tom recounts his previous studies as background to his current PhD research aims which relate to reflexivity and how teachers perceive themselves. Tom seeks to understand the different values and beliefs, ideologies, and philosophies that teachers bring to the classroom, where these might have originated, and how this might, in turn, influence their teaching role. We chat about the various factors that influence classroom dynamics including trust, power, reflection, and teacher agency. Tom reflects on dominant ideologies, standardised - or cookie-cutter - classroom approaches, belief systems that see education as a service, addressing individual and collective student needs, and the role of teachers in making professional judgements in their own classroom contexts. Tom offers some deeper considerations related to the broader and more holistic purpose of teaching within social and collective educational systems.

Today my guest is Peter Holz, an ARIA-award winning audio mixer, producer and songwriter. Peter has mixed, recorded and written songs for a range of Australian and international artists and performers including The Veronicas, Jessica Mauboy and Delta Goodrem as well as Gang Of Youths, Peking Duk, Vance Joy and many others. In this episode, Peter recounts his strong fascination with music and sounds, early experiments with multi-track recording and his pursuit of the mysterious sparkle of vocal harmonies. Peter outlines his approach to studio work and the dynamics of collaborating with artists in the recording, producing and mixing process. Peter also shares his thoughts on the technology and processes used in previous as well as contemporary music production, the importance of learned skills in creative industries and the simple yet profound value of taking the time to read the software user manual.

Today my guest is Jo Anne Rey, a teacher-librarian, author and researcher. Jo is also a Dharug community member;  Dharug Country covers the majority of Sydney, Australia. In this episode we explore Jo’s Australian Indigenous identity, her research approach and methodologies and her family storying as woven into Sydney’s Dharug and colonial heritages. Jo’s storying is the basis of her recent doctoral thesis Country Tracking Voices: Dharug women’s perspectives on presences, places and practices, that explores the voices and perspectives of seven Dharug ‘sistas’. This research led to the development of a Macquarie University Indigenous Studies unit which sheds light on the places and practices that characterise the local area and its original inhabitants. In our conversation we explore the profound significance of Goanna Walking across Country, a motif representing the third-cultural way, an approach and process required when walking between Aboriginal and academic presences, places and practices. Jo also shares her thoughts on the importance of sustainable practices in caring for Country, ancestors and the Dharug community. In our time on Country, Jo and I are met by various other-than-human presences in the form of numerous and enthusiastic birds. Jo crystalizes and highlights Dharug custodians’ resilience, renewal and continuity when Country is the colonized, cosmopolitan city of Sydney.

Today my guest is Amanda Howard, who is an Associate Professor at The University of Sydney’s School of Education and Social Work. Amanda’s teaching and research relates to social work: that is, the social connections and dynamics found when groups of people – communities - come together and do things. We chat about the importance of social work in understanding how human systems and structures work as well as the ideas around inclusion, exclusion and how power with a group is distributed. Amanda outlines a key aspect of her research: assets-based community development, specifically in response to floods, bush fires and other Australian natural disasters. These ideas find a deeper significance when used to make tangible changes in the world, for example in the revision and development of policies and procedures that impact communities.

Today my guest is Vicki Cornish, a Fibre Artist and teacher from Newcastle, New South Wales. Vicki creates contemporary textiles with ancient tools and techniques. Her craft practice focuses on hand spinning, weaving and stitching using natural fibres and low impact methods of processing and dyeing. Vicki also has a particular interest in historical tools and techniques, including those used by Vikings over a thousand years ago.

In this episode we explore Vicki's studies in Visual Arts, Applied Fashion Design and Technology. We also find out more about a range of fibre craft practices and techniques used by Vicki, in her art own art practice, as well as participants in hands-on workshops.
