The poet Raymond Antrobus explores the art of translating sound for the eye, looking at the poetic possibilities of closed captions.

What can these captions - designed to illuminate the sound world of a film or TV show - reveal about how we conceive of sound itself?

Raymond speaks to fellow D/deaf poets and artists to explore their experiences navigating the spaces between the words. Are closed captions just a simple act of transcription - [Doorbell rings] - or a more subjective act of translation? How might we reimagine them?

Featuring the sound artist Christine Sun Kim, poet Meg Day, filmmaker and founding member of FWD Doc Lindsey Dryden and the captioner Calum Davidson from Red Bee Media. With poetic captions inspired by the work of Christine Sun Kim.

This documentary has been produced in three forms - as a radio broadcast, as a transcript with annotations from Raymond and as a subtitled video.

Inventions In Sound

Learning Without Results | Instructions:

• Take two sets of recording devices and microphones (beg, borrow &amp; steal where appropriate)
• Make your way to a recording location (outdoors, domestic, distant, close or otherwise)
• Press ‘record’ approximately 10 minutes before you arrive on one of the devices 
*If your recording location required no travel, press record and wait
• After approximately 10 minutes unpack and set up the second recording device
• Check position, mic, levels etc…
• Simultaneously press ‘record’ on second device whilst pressing ‘pause’ on the first device
• Wait for another 10 minutes
• Simultaneously press ‘un-pause/record’ on first recording device whilst pressing ‘stop’ on the second recording device
• Pack up all belongings and leave area 
*If your recording location required no travel, remain for another ten minutes
• Press ‘stop’ on first recording device
• Delete recording made on second recording device 
• Listen back to recording made on first recording device

The Slow Cancellation Of The Future

Andrew of Gwynedd was a 13th century Welsh cleric, famous in his day for his celebrated "revision" of Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain, but later consigned to historical obscurity for this plagiarism. Jonah Eastberry was a 17th century natural philosopher of modest birth and means, forever circling the outskirts of the Royal Society of London. They would seem to have little in common - except for a shared obsession with a neolithic burial mound in northern Wales.

The pick was [then] used to hammer on the surface, and by this means, 
the Angle Ditch was discovered. The sound produced by hammering on an 
excavated part is much deeper than on an undisturbed surface, a 
circumstance worth knowing when exploring a grass-grown downland, 
though not applicable to cultivated ground.

Sonic archaeology is a revealing, an exposing of the machinic past, 
and a divining of the future; predicting and observing the end of a 
process. This archaeology is necessarily expressed on that which is 
hidden.

With remote special guest Shintaro Miyazaki, of algorhythmics fame, 
Martin Howse explores, through recordings, live action and 
conversation, the otherwise hidden domain of invisible process and 
execution within the machines which surround us. As a finale, the 
simple site of execution will be shifted, from central semiconducting 
processor, to the skin of the hand.

Unsound Methods

Geocinema project investigates planetary-scale sensory networks that consist of multiple forms of recording, transmitting, processing, calibrating, stitching and reworking images in complex feedback loops between satellites, geosensors, cell phones, surveillance cameras, ground observation and more. In a conversation with media theorist Jussi Parikka, filmmaker Solveig Suess and art historian Asia Bazdyrieva address these multiple scales of large infrastructural systems as they not only challenge the modes of representation, but also require novel ways of understanding visual aesthetics in such geopolitical systems. Drawing on the recent field work on the Digital Belt and Road Initiative in China, they speak, among other things, about the oblique connections between past Jesuit contributions to techniques of earth sensing, vast resource extraction, and current demands aimed towards battling a future of climate change. Here, filmmaking and collaborative practices become both a mode of research and a modest proposition to draw missing planetary connections.

Jussi Parikka is a writer, media theorist and professor in technological culture & aesthetics at Winchester School of Art (University of Southampton). He is the author of various books on media archaeology, digital culture and technical media, including Insect Media: An Archaeology of Animals and Technology (2010), What is Media Archaeology? (2011), and A Geology of Media (2015).

Geocinema consists of art historian Asia Bazdyrieva and filmmaker Solveig Suess. Bazdyrieva studied analytical chemistry at the Kyiv National University (2009) and art history at The City University of New York as a Fulbright grantee (2017). Suess completed her undergraduate in Visual Cultures at the Glasgow School of Art, with her postgraduate at the Centre for Research Architecture, Goldsmiths University, London (2017). Bazdyrieva and Suess started their collaboration at the New Normal urban design think-tank, Strelka Institute, Moscow (2018).

The podcast features Jessika Khazrik’s music composed for Geocinema’s next documentary (expected in 2020) as well as “I Am Not Your History” from “Terrella Al2ard Alsaghira” (2017). 

The conversation was recorded in Berlin, following a collaboration between Parikka and Geocinema under the Digital Earth Fellowship in 2018-2019.
