“Coco, duérmete ya” is an adult lullaby. Traditionally, the speaker of a lullaby is a mother or a wet nurse who sings the child to sleep. In our song, a mother sings to the coco - a nursery cautionary figure equivalent to the bogeyman - to put it to sleep, afraid that it will cease to exist because the child has already fallen asleep. When no one is afraid of the coco (when the sleeping child stops thinking of it), the coco no longer exists. In the same way, the mother fears that, if she falls asleep and stops thinking of herself, there will be no one to think of her (who will watch over her, who will tuck her in?) and she too will no longer exist. She will sink into the abyss, or into sleep: that which swallows the coco when the child falls asleep.

From the initial feeling of chaos, from the first impression of nothingness, are born improbable lines that scatter in the surrounding space. Colliding before our confused eyes, the pattern turns around and returns to its core. The meanders – yet linear – embodies the uncertainty where the sounds unfold. Where our mind wanders. Where our thoughts fly away.

I created this track in collaboration with the researchers from the Algomus team: http://www.algomus.fr/. This track is our contribution for the AI Song Contest 2021. The song is a co-creative experiment in shaping music, transforming our way of thinking and generating sound. The composer brings his own chords and melodies, which are mixed and re-generated using algorithms designed by the music research team. Seeking to capture new emotions in that AI music content, the composer selects, designs, and organizes chords, melodies, and sounds in subtle lines scattered in the music space.

I composed this waltz in memory of the late Bill ("Dilly") Dillof, a good friend and esteemed musician of the old-time music community. It is dedicated to Bill and Paula Bradley, his wife.

This recording was made  Monday, 8/13/18, with myself (Mark Simos) on fiddle and Patrice Jackson-Tilghman on cello. The recording was made at Notable Productions, in Watertown MA, Dan Cantor engineer.

The tune came to mind the morning after I heard the sad news of Bill's passing. I wanted to add a second line, and drew on lessons I'd learned in my counterpoint studies over the summer, for which I thank my friend and mentor Allen LeVines.

Hello, folks - my pal Brendan Doyle, banjoist of the Cliffhangers and fellow holder-forth on the Clifftop Notes records, has requested that I post a track or two from that erstwhile triptychal project. So - as our country faces the great Fiscal Cliffhanger, I can't think of a more appropriate tune to share than "Cliffhanger" itself - the final track on my (temporarily unavailable) Clifftop Notes Vol. 1 - a fiddle tune in the key of A in which an A chord is never played... Enjoy!

Recorded live to 2 track for audiophile label Mapleshade Records in '93, it was never officially released. This track combines unusual versions of a couple old tunes with one by Mark.
