MIDNIGHT MOOD is a ballad version of a song, written by songwriter Ben Raleigh and keyboardist Joe Zawinul, first released on Zawinul's 1966 album "Money In The Pocket". The same year it was also extensively re-arranged from Zawinul's original 6/8 hard bop rendition and recorded by Wes Montgomery as a very open, relaxed 12/8 ballad on the album "Tequila".

"Boots of Spanish Leather" has been covered by many musicians since it's release by Bob Dylan in 1964 on his album The Times They Are a-Changin'. Comparisons are often made between this song and the traditional ballad "Scarborough Fair" (from which Dylan's "Girl from the North Country" is also drawn), both regarding arrangement and melody.The lyrics consist of alternating male and female narrators.

Milonga De Mis Amores (Traditional Argentina)

'Nostalgias' is a tango from 1935.  The music is by Juan Carlos Cobián (1896 - 1953), renowned Argentinian pianist, leader, composer and lyricist. The lyrics to this well-known song were written by Enrique Cadícamo.
The two musicians performing the piece here are  bandoneonist Rodolfo Roballos, and bassist Manuel Villar Lifac visiting Melbourne in 2018 from La Academia Tango Club (Buenos Aires).

The Implicate Order (2005)

Bob Dylan recorded this song as an out-take in 1962 during the sessions that would eventually be used for his second studio album 'Freewheelin'.  In 1963 he performed it again for American television audiences during a show sponsored by the Westinghouse company. Most notably the Ballad Of Hollis Brown was recorded then released in 1964 on his third album 'The Times They Are A-Changin'. The song employs flat-picking of open-tuned guitar in the Appalachian style. The origin of the composition is supposedly based on the ballad "Pretty Polly", a song Dylan performed at the Gaslight Club in New York City prior to recording this song.  Another notably compelling performance of the song was recorded by jazz singer/pianist/songwriter Nina Simone on her 1966 album 'Let It All Out'.

BALLAD OF HOLLIS BROWN by Bob Dylan (1962)

J. D. Loudermilk (1934-2016) wrote this guitar instrumental song for star country artist/guitar player and producer Chet Atkins (1924-2001) at the request of Atkins who had said to Loudermilk "I'm getting too deeply into jazz. I need to get back to my roots". 

During a filmed interview many years later Loudermilk humorously muses "I played this song for him and he picked up the guitar and finished it before I could finish it. (Incredulous) He finished the damn thing before I finished it ... and I wrote it!" 

Atkins was the first to produce a recording of his own performance of the song for commercial release through the RCA Victor label in May 1961. It was very successful and has since been covered by at least 14 other artists including Boots Randolf, Doc Watson, The Ventures, Carl Perkins and Scotty Moore, Steve Howe, Tony Rice, and Tommy Emmanuel. As such the song surely retains the status of a 'standard' in the country (guitar-picking) repertoire.

Songe D'Automne

A track produced over a year ago but remixed during this period in isolation. Mark McGurgan (squeezebox and vocal), Buddy Gottas (drums) and myself (ac. guit and bass). "When I Paint My Masterpiece" is a 1971 song written by Bob Dylan. It was first released by The Band (Dylan's backing musicians from 1965-67). The Band recorded Dylan's song for their 1971 album Cahoots. Dylan himself recorded the song in the March 1971 sessions at New York's Blue Rock Studio where he was backed by Leon Russell and his then current touring band.

When I Paint My Masterpiece by Bob Dylan (1971)

My 14-yo son sang this song just after his voice broke (his voice fell by about an octave during that year). He introduced me to the song and I ended up remixing it this year to clear up a the clutter and balance his voice in the mix a bit more than it was originally. Having been divorced twice I liked the sentiment of the song too as it expresses  something buried way back in there somewhere. I hope you hear it through own experiences anyway.
