Blessed, with a bruising Otis Redding like voice the young Toots had been discovered singing in a barbershop in Trench Town. By 1973 Toots and The Maytals had their rabble-rousing bar-room reggae down to a fine art. Funky Kingston, recorded at the Dynamic Studios in Kingston for Warwick Lyn and on Island Records, ramps the soul side of their sound for one of the most uplifting reggae songs of all time. 
 
Toots and the Maytals became a favourite of rock critics in the 70s and listening to Funky Kingston, it is easy to understand why. The muscular rhythms, “Toots” Hibbert’s hoarse exhortations and his slightly surreal lyrics appealed to the spirit of a more fundamental age that rock music had lost.

Here is the set I did for the King Of The 45's event held in Bournemouth on 13th July 2019. As you may have guessed, it was a 7" vinyl only event. I have never played only 7"s before, so looked forward to dusting off some of my huge collection of such vinyl!

It was just a bit of fun with some mates, socialising and catching up with old friends. I played some classic reggae bangers and some UK and French hip hop from 1987-1990.
