Summer lounge bar

Over the weekend, a tiny creature showed up at our home, in need of a little help.  After a day of some care, it scurried away to continue on with life, no worse for the wear.  The experience brought to mind a hymn I used to sing as a child, “All Things Bright & Beautiful." The refrain is probably the most well-known part of the hymn:

“All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.”

The hymn speaks of the wonder of creation as well as the inherent value of life and served as the inspiration for this piano improvisation. The words (but not the original melody) from the refrain are integrated into the composition beginning at the section from :58 – 1:17 and repeating several times thereafter.

Then She Reaches for the Gun was formed in 2021 by Mat Ward. At its essence is sound collage, Ward invites musicians, sound artists, poets and anyone interested to send him files to be used, abused and showcased ‘as suggested by the work’. They are not always musical but field recordings, spoken word, engine noises and drunken rants. Animals participate a lot too! The raw material is arranged with one phrase asking for the next in an alchemical and intuitive process that will most often feature dozens of tracks weaving in and out of each other, colliding, harmonising, arguing and laughing along the way.

Both the aesthetic and the compositional methods use what Frank Zappa called Xenochrony - the mixing together of separately recorded and rhythmically opposing musical phrases to create polyrhythmic and polytempi compositions.The work also features fragmented story telling with the human voice (in many languages) appearing unannounced throughout the tracks offering up snippets of thoughts, conversations, jokes and existential angst. The absurdity of humanities desperate claim to have any real understanding of its place in the universe is revealed through the recorded follies and genuine emotions of the artists. The project is a celebration of chance, diversity and community. It pays homage to all musical tastes and genres whilst maintaining a sense of humour and irreverence that is needed to stay sane in the climate of  21st Century contemporary culture.

Story behind this set:
I recorded this set while painting the back of the T-shirt you see on the cover.
Since the day I bought it, I knew I wanted to add something personal to it.

Days later, I got a final project at university: to represent peace through a painting.
So I decided to merge my personal vision with the school assignment and gave myself the challenge of painting and recording this mix at the same time.

This is what came out...

I didn’t have time to finish the painting during this first session, so I ended up creating a part 2 of the set which I uploaded to YouTube along with a POV video showing the whole process.
