July 17 will see the much-treasured analog synthesizer suite Chronology by Pakistani-American composer and drummer of the cult trio Dawn of Midi, Qasim Naqvi, finally receiving a worldwide vinyl release on Record Store Day 2021.

Originally conceived only digitally in 2016, Chronology was Qasim’s first release of electronic music. Having been in the world of improvised and classical music up to this point, it seemed only fitting for Naqvi’s inaugural electronic music album to be made exclusively on a malfunctioning synthesizer — an old Moog Model D. Leaving the abundant options of a computer behind.  

“Taken individually, the six pieces on Chronology dispense small-scale hits of gorgeousness. In tandem, the tracks cohere to form a compelling suite of pieces that can subtly undermine expectations for ambient-influenced composition.” — Pitchfork

According to Naqvi: "On the level of functionality, the synthesizer was kind of janky. It produced a low level din of white electrical noise and some of the knobs were erratic. Sometimes it would just shut off and the idea would end there. It was like bringing some ancient thing back from the dead and having it adapt. But with sound that always leads to interesting results." 

He used these anomalies to his advantage and the overall piece has a unique sonic signature that would perhaps be impossible to recreate on another Model D.

“When we think of a computer, we think of limitless options and an abundance of memory for recalling ideas. The Moog holds a reverse approach. It's a tactile piece of machinery with discrete circuits, 3 voltage-controlled oscillators and knobs for controlling the contour of the oscillator. It's monophonic, so chords or polyphonic playing is out of the question. The absence of this function required a layering of ideas in stages. Also, there's no way of saving anything or recalling presets. Once you make a sound, that's it. It exists in that moment unless you chronicle the settings by writing them down. It's kind of like making a gesture with a brush. Once it strikes the canvas, you can either freeze it in time or erase it forever”, Qasim recalls.

Chronology will be released physically on Record Store Day 2021, July 17 on Erased Tapes — followed by a digital release on July 31.

Logic Moon and Atmøsphäre come together for the first time to bring forth ‘Fading’, a carefully assembled study of light and dark - or rather, the convergence of the two. Rarely is one without the other, and their ever changing interaction inspires curiosity and humility. One minute light dances in the dark, and the next minute the shadows mime their way across illuminated canvases.

Logic Moon’s deliberately faint compositional style, coupled with Atmøsphäre’s ear for musical space, combine for something noticeably more affective than their previous solo outputs. Hints of early Tim Hecker and Bersarin Quartett shine through, placing the listener in a quiet contemplation, as controlled thought flickers in the stillness. Light fades in, and then fades out again.

An Autumn Day

To mark this year’s 88th day and as an acknowledgement to these unprecedented circumstances we find ourselves in, Piano Day founder, pianist and producer Nils Frahm releases a collection of eight solo piano pieces titled 'Empty'.

Conceived of just before Nils broke his thumb and composed the similarly intimate solo piano album 'Screws', 'Empty' is a soothing vessel of eight simple and serene pieces originally recorded as the music to a short art film he shot with his friend and film director Benoit Toulemonde. Drifting through emotions from the stark and sobering opener 'First Defeat', to the gently euphoric 'No Step On Wing' and the contemplative but hopeful closer 'Black Notes', with its poignant minute of silence, 'Empty' is a comforting score for these turbulent times.

“When I came back from the hospital with a broken thumb and listened to the recordings, I felt they were unfinished. I decided to put them aside and started to work on my small album, 'Screws'. 

Many many other notes of the piano have been struck since these days, and before we all forget about this, I thought it would be a good moment to share these lullabies with you. I hope they help you stay all strong and calm in these days of solitude – despite the hardship, we can discover introspection and reflection unexpectedly. Who knows what it is good for.

Two years after the release of his acclaimed Erased Tapes debut, ‘The Transition’, Californian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist David Allred returns with a solo piano perspective on the album, aptly titled Felt The Transition — out December 18.

"Felt The Transition is a new minimalist solo piano perspective on my experimental chamber folk album previously released in 2018, called The Transition. This music is reinterpreted on my 114 year old upright piano which was very kindly donated to me by my friend Adam Selzer who previously ran a recording studio in Portland called Type Foundry. This piano is very sentimental to me as it was used by a handful of my favorite musicians on their albums over the past 20 years, namely Peter Broderick’s ‘How They Are‘ and ‘Two Balloons’.” — David Allred

Fabled Canadian avant-garde outfit Bell Orchestre are pleased to reveal their signing to Erased Tapes, ten years after the release of their last body of work.
The Montreal based group, who feature Sarah Neufeld and Richard Reed Parry from Arcade Fire amongst their six members, have previously set the blueprint for evocative, creative and sonically enriched instrumental music which defers from the often formulaic quiet-loud dynamics of post-rock music into something a whole lot more rewarding. Their first two records, 2005's Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light and 2009's As Seen Through Windows were very warmly received by critics for the cinematic scope and orchestration of their work. Whilst the band work on new material, they’re excited to sign with Erased Tapes for future releases.

To celebrate the announcement of their new musical home, Bell Orchestre are proud to share a short film, IX: Nature That’s It That’s All., directed by band member Kaveh Nabatian who utilises 16mm processing and scans of footage from the British Pathe archives.
