The story of "Inner | Outer" begins in 2015, when two members of Berlin bass combo X.A.Cute and Jerusalem's psych grooves expert, Markey Funk, set up a spontaneous jam session in the basement of an ex-spring factory building.
The outcome of that meeting - now known as "Aquasonic Research Society" (Som Recordings, 2020) - was so inspiring for the three that they determined to record again the next time Markey is in Berlin. Eventually, two more sessions took place in consecutive years at Oberbaumstübchen, overlooking river Spree, U-Bahn tracks and Universal Music headquarters. The change of location also led them to depart from the bubbling aquatic motives towards darker mesmerizing soundscapes that explore themes and mysteries of deep outer space and the human body (sometimes described as "inner space").

PREMIERE: Kosmologic Research Society - Going Home [Confused Machines]

Telepathic Fish co-founder DJ Food, aka one part of Openmind, takes us on a trip into the world of 90s chill out.

Strictly Kev likes the company of plants whilst working on music so that's handy for us isn't it?! We're assuming he's talking about a beautiful Calathea sitting in the corner for inspiration, tho his dream plant setup - a conservatory packed with Romanesco broccoli, trippy Caladiums, and Persian Shields - is something we'd be well on board with too.

Enough of the plant talk for a second and back to the music, ambient music to be clear. For those that weren't squatting in South London back in the early 90s, Openmind were the four-piece behind the mighty Telepathic Fish - the legendary ambient afterparty that transformed chill-out rooms from dub-playing afterthoughts into proper destinations.

Kev, along with Chantal Passamonte (Mira Calix, RIP), David Vallade, and Mario Aguera, started in a shared house above a shop with no neighbours to complain/bash the door down. What began as art school parties quickly grew into Sunday afternoon sessions in squatted venues - a former dole office in Brixton and even the derelict Roundhouse on New Year's Day. They hosted everyone from Aphex Twin to Mixmaster Morris among wall-to-wall mattresses, UV installations, and  Coldcut's Matt Black with his boundary pushing video projections.

The idea was simple: recreate that post-clubbing comedown vibe but on a massive scale, as an "aural and visual blanket" for club-rattled minds. They even published a fanzine called Mindfood and worked at the scene's hub, Ambient Soho record shop, helping shape what Simon Reynolds called a "wombeldelic sound-and-light bath" in contrast to the current trend of hardcore and it's relentless assault.

Thirty years on, that spirit's having a comeback. Events like London's A Loose Ting are bringing back the bedding and the hushed reverence, while Berlin's Overflow is going full sensory overload with vibrating mattresses, fountains, and harpists. New York's Planetarium gatherings have people mostly horizontal, inspired by psychedelic therapy sessions. There's even and ambient sauna in South London you might have come across via the wonder of Music To Watch Seeds Grow By's recent takeover.  Our very own Watching Trees dabbled in said chill out space this year, pairing the abstract and the ambient with projected dappled sunlight visuals from the mighty Jamie House. Turns out people still need those little havens away from the madness, especially in this day and age!

Also handily 30 years on the Openmind crew have just compiled the first-ever Telepathic Fish retrospective for Fundamental Frequencies - a double vinyl love letter to those hazy early-90s mornings when the music finally slowed down.

For this Seeds Mix, Kev has leaned into his love of minimalism and systems music - repetition built from layers of loops offset against each other to form subtle polyrhythms. There's a deliberate avoidance of drum machines here in favour of organic percussion, and around the eight-minute mark, a section from Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia that captures the feeling of being deep in the forest, phone abandoned, discovering that paradise was just a forage away.

This remix is one of the first productions I did since completing my album "Instinct", so it has plenty of similar references. Yet, with it I was already exploring some new territories within the world of haunted groove music. Based on the song's title, I imagined one of the main streets of Tel Aviv in its darkest and emptiest hours. A kind of contrast, full of urban demons, to the image of the "city without a break".

I've known Ryskinder for nearly a decade, and we even tried to collaborate, so when he asked me to do a remix, it was a special challenge. Around the same time I was watching various vampire films by Jean Rollin, so it very much inspired me to take the remix in a horror direction.

Ever since CRuNCH 22 introduced "Cairo" in their live shows, it became one of my favourite numbers in their repertoire. Once given a chance, I set on a mission of taking the band's simple tight groove on a mind-melting trip. Like with my every previous remix, this was a chance to expand my palette and try new ideas. The real challenge here, however, was to build a larger new sonic world on top of recording that was already very full (even though it's just drums, keys and turntables). The result is an explosive mixture of a lot of stuff that I've been into recently - a long and trippy sound exploration journey, squeezed into four and a half minutes.

This remix sums up 4 years of exploration of 1960-1970's psychedelia and its extension into music of today. It brings together the experiences I had, while working on the "Go Ask Alice" project, and later - while doing the Acid Test parties with Schoolmaster. This was also the reason for its title - "Ode to the Sugar Cube". It indeed is going very far from the original tune, taking the instruments and the lyrics of the song into entirely new context.

This is also the peak moment of Agitaçao Popular as a musical project (before it turned into a wider cultural concept). The remix was produced while I was helping Kobayashi Procelain to record their album (which is out very soon!), so the guys occasionally contributed some material. Huge props also goes out to Total Reboot for the synth solo in the mid-part, which took the hole thing into stratosphere.

Jerusalem-based musician/producer/DJ/turntablist/crate-digger and music archivist, Markey Funk is a staple of the Israeli groove scene. Starting off as a Hip-Hop and Funk DJ, Markey's musical palette has grown constantly wider and deeper throughout the years, embracing everything between Folk, Psychedelia, Early Electronic and Library music from around the world. While being famous for his explosive Soul-Funk-Psych-Groove DJ-sets, he’s also known as a freak of the 1960′s style, cinema and counter-culture. Besides collecting records and playing them for happy audiences, Markey has been writing and producing his own music for more than a decade: from hip hop beats, through fully sample-based debut album, to remixes for a wide variety of local artists. Recent years also saw his first globally distributed releases on vinyl: sitar-beat 7inch single under the moniker Les Hippies and the concept space-age groove full-length album "The Mystery of Mordy Laye", based on unfinished recordings by an anonymous local band from the late 1970's.
