The Thorn Of Autism

Pam Benton started noticing small changes in her pastor husband. Though Wilson had retired, he had agreed to serve as interim pastor in another church for eighteen months. Eighteen months turned into five years.  Pam’s concerns grew when Wilson started using notes for his sermons. Since both of their mothers had Alzheimer’s, Pam and Wilson did not hesitate to get their doctor’s opinion, hoping for a simple answer, but knowing Alzheimer’s was not unlikely. 

In this conversation with Sharon Betters, Pam describes how a diagnosis has changed the direction of their plans for retirement, how important it is to get an early diagnosis and the way the Lord has grown her faith. Pam’s children told her that in spite of a lifetime of ministry, this season of life is perhaps the most important as she models for them how to love their dad well in what many call the long goodbye.

Children raised in the same family sometimes grow up with very different responses to life. Such is the story of Julie Malone and her beautiful daughter, Allie. Julie and her husband, Tim loved their lives as parents and Tim’s ministry to teens. But their idyllic life would take a turn into a foreign land of broken places. Julie says, 

“I am very thankful for my childhood as I came to know and love the Lord as my savior at a very young age. I really never knew a day without Jesus in my life. EP 1 What Is A Man After God's Own Heart Pt 1

When Saul’s character led the people into great disillusionment, insecurity and international danger God speaks once again in 1 Samuel 13:13-14. God announces through Samuel that He has “found” a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of His people. Yet as we follow David’s life, we will see a man who committed adultery and murder. We would declare a man after God’s own heart is a man of integrity and a godly character. David had these at times. But not always. In this series, Dr. Betters shows us a scriptural definition of a man after God’s own heart, a definition that gives hope to each of us.God’s relationship to the Israelites was personal. He spoke directly to them through His prophet Samuel. Poor Samuel! He had to take such discouraging messages to the people. Samuel sometimes feared for his life. When God told him to go to Jesse’s home because that is where he would find the next King, Samuel responds, “How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me!” It is in the story of David that we hear God say to Samuel, “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Samuel is given the task of anointing the next King of Israel, while the present King still reigns! The story of David is filled with intrigue, drama, terror, mystery, and suspense as David, the Shepherd boy is anointed as King but refuses to lift a hand against the King. How will God’s plan unfold?

EP 2 What Is A Man After God's Own Heart Pt 2

In this message, we continue to learn life lessons from David’s response to Nabal and his wife Abigail. We see a portrait of common grace and a man who took it all for granted. Nabal held immense wealth and enjoyed great luxury, God had been good to Nabal and now it was time for him to show how much he appreciate God’s faithfulness to him. Instead he reveled in drunkenness and idolatry. He abused his wife and David. Rather than thank David for his protection over his flocks, Nabal refuses to respond with gratitude or common generosity. David is ready to go to war. If not for Abigail, many would have lost their lives. Abigail, the “joy of her father,” married to an abusive man, finds a way to boldly represent her husband and in so doing, glorifies God and ensures the safety of her people. Dr. Betters points out that Abigail is a picture of the bride of Christ and that the bride of Christ is called to be the servant of Christ to the world He came to seek and to save.

Like frogs in a kettle, through intermarriage with Egyptians and moral compromise, they were slowly choked by the oppression of a heathen system. But what does this have to do with us today? Up until this point in the study of the book of Revelation, Dr. Betters has evaluated the four major views or systems of interpreting this book as well as the questions raised about the millennium period, when the great tribulation will occur, whether Christians will have to endure that tribulation, and an analysis of the signs leading up to the second coming of Christ.  In this message Dr. Betters goes into greater detail behind the style or manner in which the book was written.  He explains how it cannot be read and understood as an unfolding or unveiling of events in chronological order but as a revelation using progressive parallelism.  Dr. Betters will show how the unveiling of Jesus Christ and His second coming is best understood as seven parallel and progressively intensifying accounts.

The framework of the seven progressive parallel sections in the book of the Revelation were established in the previous message.  Now Dr. Betters begins the detailed analysis of the first parallel section which covers God’s messages to the seven churches in Asia Minor.
