Berlin Mixtapes - Dilby - Episode 041

We continue our Berlin Mixtapes series with an exciting young artist that is taking the deep house world by storm.

Next up we welcome Swiss🇨🇭 DJ and producer King Ben who is probably the pure opposite of a late bloomer - more of an early starter. Ben grew up near Zurich in a home with a wide variety of influences: His mother is Turkish, his father, who is a gifted jazz musician is Swiss, plus both have Spanish and Polish roots. No wonder Ben started playing the piano at the age of nine and after watching a DJ play for the first time at the age of twelve, Ben was hooked. It didn't take long for Ben to get noticed with his first release on a small label in Germany, followed by further releases on Berlin labels such as Kindisch, Bar 25 Music, Ouïe Circle and others. Today his tracks are played by international stars appearing in DJ sets, radio shows and guest mixes worldwide with a release portfolio that now spans across Berlin, Switzerland and the US. We caught up with Ben to find out more.

Berlin Mixtapes - King Ben - Episode 044

Next up we welcome the amazing Steve Kelley. A passionate, dedicated and energetic talent, Steve began almost 20 years ago as a DJ having played for some of the largest and respected brands in dance music. Steve’s sound is very much about the groove and melody, accompanied with a deep, chunky house vibe.

The next natural step has been production and it hasn’t taken too long for Steve’s studio skills to be recognised with his tracks being picked up by the likes of Steve Bug (Poker Flat Recordings), Lost Desert (Souksonic), Nick Warren (The Sound Garden) and also Native Instruments as part of the Traktor Pro update. With a developing profile Steve decided to step into the forum of promoting his own events back in his

hometown. For the past 10 years Steve created the formidable monthly terrace party Tantalise presents Palava. The parties attracted roadblocks of people, with an atmosphere and reputation that have seen clubbers travel the length and breadth of the country to savor its unique vibe. As a result of the Tantalise’s notoriety Steve has seen himself travel the world to replicate his DJ performances internationally with gigs in the US, Germany, Ibiza, Sweden and holding a residency in Italy.

Steve as well as being an exceptional DJ talent, it is certainly true to say that he is one of the next generation of club land pioneers.

Berlin Mixtapes - Steve Kelley - Episode 045

This guest mix is the LIVE recording from the Berlin-Brighton club night at the Arch, Brighton for Brighton Music Conference on 25.05.23.

It's been a very fruitful and exciting week as the Brighton Music Conference returned to the seafront for 3 days of panels, networking, parties and glorious sunshine. Not only that, we welcomed an old friend to the city who not only rocked the Thursday club night but also glided and smiled with us throughout the conference. We caught up with Timo Maas. 

Timo is a storyteller. For him, it's never about back-to-back bangers or brainless hits, but about crafting, building, teasing and eventually pleasing. From hefty concrete funk to stripped-back and brain-altering techno via psychedelic synths stronger than any drug, he knows exactly what to play and when. He has done so at every major club and festival on the planet from Tomorrowland to Kazantip, Creamfields to Coachella, while for 18 years during the golden years of Ibiza's Circoloco party at DC10 he was a regular guest, which is a testament to the fact that he has always stayed ahead of the times.

Two-time Grammy Award-nominated Timo has made every shade of electronic music from famous remixes of Azzido Da Bass and Depeche Mode, leftfield reworks of Afro-Peruvian group Novalima and Indonesian all-female heavy metal band Voice of Baceprot via work with pop greats like Paul McCartney, Madonna and Placebo. But his pure love of techno keeps him coming back to his most famous sound. It's all united by his ability to craft weighty bass and rolling drums that lock you in. To dream up unusual breakdowns, freaky vocal treatments and deftly designed details that sound like nothing else. He has released on majors like Warner and Virgin and underground staples like Stripped Down Records, Cocoon, Mobilee, Tenampa and Last Night On Earth. But whatever he does and wherever he does it, Timo is always investigating new musical grounds.

Next up we welcome one half of super duo Evil Nine AKA EVL TOM. Tom has been focusing his time on an eagerly awaited up and coming solo album, which has got us all at Berlin-Brighton HQ very excited. 

As a background, Evil Nine first came together in 1998 after meeting in Brighton. After sending in a demo cassette they were signed by Adam Freeland to his Marine Parade record label, with their first release being the single 'Less Stress'. According to Tom (in an interview given to Fabric Nightclub) part of the reason that their demo cassette tape was actually listened to rather than thrown away (by 1998 cassettes had become virtually obsolete in favour of CDs) was because of their friendship with Jemma Griffiths, who worked for Marine Parade at the time. 

After further single releases their debut album 'You Can Be Special Too' was released to critical acclaim in 2004, winning the breakspoll 2004 award for best album. The album featured collaborations with Aesop Rock and Juice Aleem, amongst others. The album track "Hired Goons" features in the video game Test Drive Unlimited.

In addition to their own material, Evil Nine has also released two albums for the Y4K and fabric mix series (see FabricLive.28), as well as producing remixes for dance artists including Adam Freeland, Timo Maas, Ils and UNKLE.

The pair has developed a reputation amongst both fans and critics as not being afraid to push the boundaries of what is considered breakbeat music, and tend to incorporate a multitude of styles into their DJ sets. An example of this is the track listing for Fabriclive 28, which includes artists as diverse as Simian Mobile Disco, Bodyrockers, Mystery Jets, and The Clash.

As well as regularly playing at various nightclubs both in the UK and Europe they have held residencies at Fabric Nightclub in London and Audio (now Patterns) in Brighton, as well as holding the position of 'Super-Residents' at Urban Gorilla in Sheffield.

Having met Tom many times across various decks and venues in our beloved city of Brighton, we thought it was about time we sat down together and chewed the fat about all the exciting things past, present and future. Here we go!

We continue with our next interview and guest mix by welcoming Polish Berlin-based DJ & producer Pysh AKA Filip Abramczyk to the series.  


With a firm footing in Berlin's nightlife, Pysh often straddles a busy schedule that  takes him on adventures between the German capital and his homeland. His performances have regularly graced the lineups and stages of the largest Polish music clubs and festivals, which has been acknowledged by a chapter devoted to him in the book "30 years of the Polish techno scene", therefore placing him among one of the undisputed leaders in his native home. In his achievements so far, he has shared the stage with an eyebrow raising large number of leading artists within the electronic scene such as Eelke Kleijn, Robag Wruhme, Guy J, Robert Babicz, Butch, Josh Wink, Pleasurekraft, Nicole Moudaber, Kollektiv Turmstrasse and many more.

We continue our Mixtapes series with an exciting young artist that has a very bright future ahead of him.

Next up we welcome Apprentis, a mysterious Dutch DJ and producer with a knack for slinky, affecting electronic music that straggles the deeper end of house and elements of techno.


With a recent release out on Steve Bug's sub label Sublease Music called 'Concern', this three track release truly show-cases his range of skills and moods.


Concern, the title track, features a beautiful arpeggiated synth line that builds the vibe before a chugging, balearic groove sets in for the duration.

Noseblunt is more urgent - referencing a harder techno sound while merging with a swung groove and a nice vocal sample.

Last up is Kill People, a stripped down last night heater that hones in on a groove and keeps it locked for the dance floor.

With a string of many other releases to his name already, Apprentis has featured on BBC Radio1, DJmag, Circoloco, Rinse FM, NTS Radio, Red Light Radio,Operator Radio, Stranded FM and many more! We caught up with Apprentis this week to find out what makes him tick.

Prismode & Solvane are lovers and creators of Progressive House & Melodic Techno. Kickstarting their residencies at well-known Berlin institution Ritter Butzke back in 2015, both artists quickly realised that they were an ideal fit. Think of Fish & Chips, Burgers and Fries or Beans on Toast, when these two get together it certainly gets tasty. Fast forward to 2023, and the duo have become an important part of the Ritter Butzke family and are heavily ingrained in everything to do with the brand. 

Prismode took charge as the Director of the club’s booking, whilst Solvane got on the airwaves with their very own radio show „Radio Butzke“ on Fritz Radio and as label manager of „Ritter Butzke Records“. It doesn’t stop there for the two music wizards, whilst the club brand is keeping them busy, they have also enjoyed releases on Berlin's infamous labels „Katermukke“ and Oliver Koletzki’s „Stil vor Talent“. However, even though they love creating and meddling in the studio, what gets them really excited is to get together in front of a crowd and play, where things can get a tad rowdy. 

Famous for the energy they inject into their shows, which showcases their true passion for the music and brings their unique style to the fore, the pair have been globetrotting the big stages from London to Istanbul and Amsterdam to Ibiza. We caught up with them both before their gig with us on the 7 July and our third Ritter Butzke showcase together.

Next up we welcome the fabulous Black Light Smoke to the series. We have been big fans of his for some time here at Berlin-Brighton HQ especially enjoying the expertly laced and groove filled releases he has been putting out there for some time. 

Black Light Smoke is the electronic music moniker of Jordan Lieb - producer, songwriter, and Daytime Emmy Award winning film and tv composer. A Chicago native and child of 90s house music, Jordan transplanted to New York City in 2001, where his career as a multi-disciplined musician has taken flight in many forms. 

Black Light Smoke first lit up the house music scene in 2010 with his EP “Lovework” (Scissor & Thread), which was spurred on by a remix from DJ T and a spot on Andrew Weatherall’s Masterpiece. He followed up with “Rough Cuts” (2013), delivering the dance floor banger “That’s My Yes”, and the 80s-synth-drenched “Firefly” (2014), two tracks from which were featured in Ana Lily Amirpour’s 2016 indie cult film “The Bad Batch”. With “City Life” and “Nothing Makes Me Feel (Good Anymore)” (2019) Black Light Smoke returned to his jacking and deep house roots.

Black Light Smoke has showcased his wide breadth of influences with releases on Voodoo Down, hafendisko, Cut Mistake Music, Nein Records, and his own imprint Death Decay Magic. His sound spans from house, techno, italo, EBM and post punk, often infused with his own haunting vocals. Black Light Smoke has performed his unique live set around the globe, including Fabric in London, Boiler Room, Robot Heart, the BPM festival in Mexico, and in many cities across North America. 

In June 2023 he returns to revered New York label Scissor and Thread with Ghosts, a sophomore LP that sees the Chicago native revisiting his youth through exploring the origins of house music, while touching on themes of closure, creativity and identity. This LP is something of an anticipated homecoming as he debuted on the label over a decade ago with his gritty, analog sound, and he’d become a regular fixture throughout Scissor and Thread’s earlier years before pursuing other projects.

As the summer draws to a close we head on over to the shores of Ibiza for a little extended sunshine. Whilst the UK summer has been a wash out for most parts, Ibiza has been baking in the Mediterranean heatwaves leading to a scorching and memorable season for locals and tourists alike. We therefore welcome the fabulous Greta Levska to the series to shine some warmth and light to us disgruntled weather deprived Northern Europeans. 

Lithuanian-born, London-raised and now Ibiza-based Greta has a rich multicultural background that feeds into the music she makes and plays. She has released a wealth of new music this year on Shall Not Fade and a recent release on Steve Bug's Berlin-based Poker Flat. In addition, she is also resident each and every Monday at Gorgon City & Danny Howard’s Amnesia Ibiza residency this summer as well as playing further dates for the world-renowned club’s own in house party Pyramid. We caught up with Greta after a fabulous year to find out more!

Next up we welcome one of Brighton's latest stars. Banxi AKA Caroline Banks is a versatile and internationally renowned DJ and music producer with a rich background in electronic music. Born in the UK with Irish heritage, she has a strong passion for travel which has shaped her career as a DJ; spending a year in China, 2 years in Ibiza, and becoming deeply connected to and respected within the Goa music scene. At the age of 16, she moved to London, where she delved into underground music that ignited her desire to be a part of it.

Banxi quickly achieved success in 2003 with high-profile DJ residencies across the UK and an invitation to join the prestigious superlabel, Nukleuz. She also earned recognition as a Mixmag Future Hero. Her craft and her distinctive sound have evolved since her early clubbing days, from a harder, faster sound to a more melodic, layered and atmospheric journey through minimal, melodic techno and organic house. She loves taking the crowd on an adventure, injecting energy into her sets and forging a strong connection with the dance floor.


Since relocating from Ibiza in 2020, Banxi has been a regular on the Brighton music scene, performing at notable events such as Berlin-Brighton gigs and supporting artists like Timo Maas at the Brighton Music Conference. Her performances are known for taking audiences on musical journeys, reflecting her diverse musical influences and experiences.

Next up we welcome one of Brighton's longest running DJs and Berlin-Brighton resident Matt POoK. Inhabiting a harmonic ecosystem from inception, he has spent a lifetime gathering inspiration from artists as diverse as: Hawkwind, Hendrix, King Kurt & Fred Wesley and the Horny Horns – and from genres ranging from punk, break beat, psychobilly and acid house.

With solid foundations hammered into the cold, dark, granite of the Welsh Mountain free party scene, his musical journey has seen him stick to roads less travelled and choose to remain in the darker realms of the sub-terra.

Initially concentrating on carving out his space as a DJ, organic growth from the 90s rave scene and through early progressive house - it was then that breaks became a real thing. Fully embroiled in the scene and never content to simply exist, it was during this time (circa 2000 onwards) that his much lauded brap.fm radio show “The Beatroute Sessions” received regular nominations for “Best Radio Show” at Breakspoll. With breaks his chosen rhythm for nearly a decade it was not until 2010 when he rediscovered techno and prog-house that his focus switched back to 4/4. It was with this move across to driving beats that also came the decision to hone his production skills – PS1 Music Maker made way for Logic which was then switched for Ableton and rather than selling his soul for quick fire success, spent time diligently putting in the hours to learn and craft the exceptional skills he holds today.

Now certain in his sound and ability to consistently deliver; initial releases including “Lola” (Dino Audio) have seen huge support from the likes of Dave Seaman, Davide Squillace, Aly & Fila, Paride Saraceni, Danny Tenaglia, Paco Osuna, Cid Inc, Solarstone, Soul Button and many more. Since then releases have come far and wide with a recent signing to Hollens label - Prospect Records plus EPs on Krafted, Nightshift as well as Meat Katie’s label Lowering The Tone Records.

To take things a step further, POoK has launched Red Giant Recordings which has seen a string of top ten releases and achieved a number one on Beatport in the techno charts.
With regular bookings across the UK and as a central figure in Brighton’s inspired, underground, electronic music scene; POoK is a rising star with sights, much like his beloved techno, set firmly on the future and all that his hard graft and undeniable talent will bring.

Next up we welcomed the super talented Belkina to the Berlin Mixtapes Series.

Belkina is a young artist from Odessa, whose career brings her regularly to Berlin after having already played extensively in New York & London.

Since 2015 she is one of the resident DJs of Ibiza Beach Club, one of the top clubs in Ukraine. In recent years she has also been the music & artist manager for Synergy Group, booking artists such as  Phonique, Stee Downes, A Man Without A Clue, Kraak & Smaak, Robosonic and DeMarzo, just to name a few.

Belkina is also a regular DJ at Odessa's Fancy Room, Caléton and 12Monkeys.

Watch out for her upcoming releases as she spends most of her free time in the studio working on her music.

Next up we welcome one of Brighton's longest serving turntable stars 🤩. Lidia De Luca, originally from Naples 🇮🇹, has always been surrounded by music. Lidia moved to Brighton in the 90’s and that's where the real fun began. With events such as the Pussycat Club, Seven Sins at the legendary Honey Club, Legend of the Dark Black at the Concorde, Brighton's music scene back then was exciting, great and inspiring and it was then that she made her choice to move from the dance floor to the mixing decks.

Next up we welcome Kotelett, one half of Kotelett & Zadak, the idiosyncratic house duo who have clocked up releases on respected imprints including Katermukke, Selador and Natura Viva. 

Kotelett & Zadak have been spreading their cheeky take on House for some while now, maintaining their outlandish fishing-related back-story over the standard/boring DJ duo biography. Although keen to bring a sense of fun to electronic music, their music is anything but flippant.

Kotelett recently returned to Poker Flat Recordings with his solo single 'I Don’t Know' earlier this year, with a spectacular remix from Swiss producer Dario D’Attis out this Friday. The rework adds a new flavour to the deep, rolling nature of the original, adding a more jacking vibe and pushing the vocal more to the fore.

We caught up with mystical (alleged) ex-fisherman Kotelett earlier this week to chat all things new release, Berlin and dance floor vibes.

Next up we welcome a super talented up and coming lady who has been working hard and producing some fantastic music. 

BEKIMACHINE AKA Beckie Thornton is a London-born, Midlands based emerging producer & DJ. She DJs progressive/melodic house & techno, peak-time/driving techno & hard techno.  Although she's recently moved to the Midlands, she was originally based in between Brighton & London, and made her Brighton debut at Berlin Brighton at the NYE party last year, opening the night for us in spectacular fashion.

2023 has marked a new chapter in her music, exploring techno and trance in her sound. Her latest single, The Void (Chaotic Evil Remix) has seen radio play on BBC Radio 1 Introducing Dance. Prior to this, she released her debut album Another Atmosphere in 2022, a video-game inspired synth pop saga, gaining positive support from SIDE-LINE Magazine and securing radio play from BBC Introducing.

Next up we welcome the super talented NILU AKA Nikolaj Lund to the Berlin Mixtapes Series, whose big passion for music takes him through many genres, therefore always surprising listeners with his sets.

After only a few years, Copenhagen based NILU has already rocked the biggest clubs in Denmark, such as Culture Box, and KB18. Furthermore he has started to create a fanbase outside Denmark, and this has taken him to play at Trump Room (Tokyo), Sankeys (Ibiza), Golden Gate (Berlin), Chalet Club (Berlin), White Night (Moldova), and various clubs in China. NILU also hosts major events in Copenhagen such as “The Garden”, and “Parallel”. Not only that, NILU has release on a string of Berlin labels from Zatar, Einmusika, Bar25 and Bunny Tiger just to name a few.

Next up we welcome two artists that we love very much here at Berlin-Brighton. Not only that, these two connoisseurs also run a label that we have been playing tracks from for quite some time on our radio shows and events.

Meet Sven & Sven, aka the Pornbugs! They started their common career in various clubs and radio stations in Germany in 2000, and since 2005 they perform mainly as Pornbugs. Pornbugs is the deep-/minimal house project of the guys, featurng a unique dancefloor sound. Their international gigs have lead them to Cape Town, New York, London, Barcelona, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Santiago, San Francisco and Washington, to name a few.

In January 2006 they founded their label Bondage-Music as a platform for ambitious releases of deep-/techhouse. The label has made a huge impact in the electronic scene since then, with releases by talented artistssuch as Mihai Popoviciu, Markus Homm, NTFO, Super Flu, Sascha Dive, Gorge, El Mundo, Frink, Philip Gonzales, Tuccillo and many many more. We caught up with the two Svens to find out about their journey and what's coming up in 2024.

Dario D'Attis has been releasing music since 1999, which has seen him become a regular DJ on the Swiss underground club scene for many years. However, Dario has attracted the attention of global audiences with the likes of Marco Carola, Åme and Dixon supporting his music.

As we continue into 2024 we're very excited to be featuring a rising star in the Deep House music scene. With a number releases under her belt with German labels 8Bit, Ohral and with our good friends over at Kittball Records, we welcome Robyn Balliet, a DJ/Producer with roots in New York and Detroit, finds no greater joy than witnessing people lose themselves in the music. 

Growing up in a family of artists and becoming a first-string violinist at a young age, her passion for music began early and evolved into a fascination with the magical effect it had on the crowds in the Detroit house & techno rave scene. Robyn admired the local Detroit legends and wanted to deeply understand the creative process of being a DJ and making music. Her journey officially began in Los Angeles, where she decided to take this passion one step further by attending Point Blank music production school. 

Robyn's early love for Detroit electronic music has come full circle as she prepares to release her own music this year, finally sharing what began in her teenage years. Rather than adhering to one exact process or style, Robyn draws influences from genres as diverse as classical to 90s hip hop, and of course, electronic music. She values the importance of not placing limits on her creativity and instead allows her mixes and productions to take on unique, inspiring, and unpredictable forms.

We continue strongly into 2024 with an artist we have loved for quite some time here at Berlin-Brighton towers. We are very excited to to have been able to catch up with Dachshund who has also delivered an exquisite selection of vibes as part of his guest mix.

Being a rather prolific producer, Dachshund has released tracks on various imprints such as Bar 25 Music, Highgrade, 8Bit, Gruuv, Upon You, Rebellion to name a few and also made some remixes on labels like Noir Music, Systematic, Kling Klong, and many more.

As a balearic artist, the balearic house sound is in his blood and you can feel that in his tracks, which often feature that foot tapping and head bopping groove that is synonymous with underground house music. His very first releases quickly hit the charts on Beatport, and for more than 15 years, Frink has celebrated over 70 chart topping releases, which have been played far and wide by DJs all over the world. Fast forward to now and since 2020 Frink has been crowned as one of the top 14 most charted artists within the Deep House genre on Beatport.

Not only that, Frink can boast over 19 thousand monthly listeners on Spotify, all of which are real and organic and not linked to any paid promotion with his success coming from the music itself. He prefers to be a man that keeps himself in the shadows of the underground and let the music do the talking for him.  


As a DJ, Frink has played in many countries across Europe including Sonar Festival, ADE and in Ibiza and it is normal to find him laying down vibes at Sisyphos in Berlin. He also has residencies in Mallorca such as at Mysa and can often be found involved in showcases for record labels Expmental Records and Berlin label Bondage Music. 

We caught up with Frink to find out more about his new release, the tranquillity of Mallorca and his love for the German capital.

We are pleased to feature a rising star amongst the world of electronic music. Ayla recently signed to Berlin label Zatar, a label run by the award winning DJ and producer Phonique.  

Zatar was launched back in 2022  as a fresh label, which focusses on new connections Phonique developed over the past 6 plus years. Artists like Fairplay, Nilu and Bakka became very close companions and are the core of Zatar. 

The label name stems from eating a lot of Za’atar (which is Zatar in German) during Phonique's visits to Amman, Petra and the Dead Sea. The label therefore features a lot Middle Eastern vibes and has rapidly pushed itself to the forefront of DJ sets and playlists alike for many artists across the world. 

Ayla is one of the newest recruits to the label and has been enjoying much success following her first release. We caught up with her this week chatting all things Brazil as well as discussing her new EP.
