Fortuna POP! (UK/Europe) and Slumberland Records (US/Canada) are proud to announce the new album by the Edinburgh based folk-rock troubadour Dan Willson who records as WITHERED HAND. “New Gods” is his stunning second album, following his critically acclaimed debut “Good News”.

Active in the world of visual art and dabbling in music for many years, Withered Hand’s Dan Willson came late to singing and songwriting at age 30, in a period of reflection between the death of a close friend and the birth of his first child. The resultant material, much of which went on to become the album “Good News,” has been praised for its depth and startling honesty.

Withered Hand has been embraced by Fife-based musical powerhouse the Fence Collective (whose sovereign King Creosote guests on the new album), seen his songs picked up on MTV and cult series Skins, and gained a legion of fans including Jarvis Cocker and Rolling Stone Magazine USA (who decreed him “Artist to Watch”).

A prolific live performer, recent Withered Hand shows have included collaborations with Pam Berry of seminal 90's US noise-pop band Black Tambourine and a rotating cast of musical friends embellishing Dan's exuberant and original songwriting alongside fragile and uplifting solo performances.

The long-awaited second album (produced by Tony Doogan – Mountain Goats/Belle & Sebastian etc - and part-funded by arts council body Creative Scotland) features guest appearances from the likes of Pam Berry, Eugene Kelly of The Vaselines and members of Belle & Sebastian and Frightened Rabbit.

The five years since “Good News” was recorded has seen Willson honing his songcraft, building his audience and gaining critical momentum. “New Gods” is a beautifully executed collection of songs from one of Scotland’s most gifted songwriters.

Danish four-piece Yung prepare for their UK festival debut this Friday, with new single ‘Blanket’ - the perfect follow up to their March Alter EP and another glimpse at the band’s ability to mix brash, persuasive Nordic punk with a rare sense of rhythm and melody.

Announcing their arrival with ‘Nobody Cares’ at the start of 2015, Yung released their international debut through Tough Love Records in March, which, in addition to selling out its limited run of vinyl ahead of release, drew comparisons to acts like the Replacements, Ty Segall and Jay Reatard, and saw them pick up acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, 6Music, Radio 1, DIY, Stereogum and NME, amongst many others.

This followed with the band making their debut UK live shows, the first of which became instantly infamous after a power-cut 20 minutes before they were due to go on stage at the Old Blue Last forced the band to up sticks and, in true DIY style, move the show to the Shacklewell Arms for a sold-out put-together show; Yung took to the stage just after midnight, with Toronto noise rockers METZ in attendance lending a spare hand in changing strings as the show reached a chaotic conclusion.

Formed in the summer of 2013 as a vehicle to escape the bewildering frustration of everyday life and young adulthood, the Aarhus-based group's new single, ’Blanket’, which retains the angst and feverish energy of their EP, but marks an impressive progression in production, with 20-year-old frontman Mikkel Holm Silkjær making a remarkable leap forward with his songwriting too. 

Following a European tour with The Districts, Yung will be returning to the UK for shows at this week’s Great Escape festival before headlining a one-off London show on Tuesday 19th May at The Stags Head.

‘Blanket’ b/w ‘Burning Bodies’ will be released digitally and as a limited run of 500 vinyl copies through Tough Love Records on 24th July 2015, with the first 100 (available only through the Tough Love site) being a white pressing and the remaining 400 black.

Story
In the highlands of Urartu, where the mountains stand like sentinels of time, there exists a fortress forgotten by maps and remembered only by echoes: Argishtikhinili, the Fortress of Echoes. There, between walls eroded by centuries of wind and silence, the spirit of Haldi, the supreme god, is said to dwell, whose voice became an eternal whisper.
The Whisper of the God
Every solstice, when the moon aligns with the summit of Mount Ararat, the echoes in Argishtikhinili intensify. They are not mere echoes of sound, but fragments of an ancient language, a tongue only the worthy can decipher. Haldi speaks not with words, but with vibrations that pass through stone and soul. Those who listen with their hearts may find answers to questions yet to be asked.
The Threshold Idol
In the center of the fortress, hidden behind an obsidian arch, stands the Threshold Idol: a figure carved from black basalt, with lapis lazuli eyes that seem to look beyond time. It is not just a statue, but the emissary of Haldi, guardian of the balance between the worlds. Its presence keeps at bay the forces that wish to shatter the veil between the visible and the invisible.
It is said that when the balance falters, when humans forget their pact with the sacred, the idol awakens. It does not walk, but its shadow lengthens, and its gaze falls upon those who must remember.
The Journey of the Worthy
Once every thousand years, a traveler arrives at Argishtikhinili, guided by dreams, visions, or songs that no one else hears. This traveler seeks not glory or power, but truth. As he crosses the threshold, echoes envelop him, and Haldi shows him fragments of lost knowledge: maps of stars that no longer exist, names of gods that were erased, and rituals that can heal or destroy.
But knowledge comes at a price. The traveler must offer a memory, one that defines their essence. Only then can they leave the fortress with Haldi's gift: the wisdom that transforms, but never obeys.
The Legacy of Echoes
Today, shepherds who cross the nearby plains say that, on moonless nights, they hear songs that belong to no living people. Some believe they are the echoes of Haldi, others that they are the wailing of those who were not worthy. But the wise men of the mountains know the truth: Argishtikhinili is not empty. It is waiting.

BIOGRAPHY
Belfast-based four-piece Girls Names are a singular proposition, both geographically and psychically removed from their contemporaries at home and abroad. Released on 18th February, their second album The New Life is the sound of a band on the fringes striving to forge their own path, purposefully out of step - and time - with their surroundings. Weighed heavy with the grey landscapes of their hometown, The New Life is isolation laid bare, shot through with an undeterred sense of purpose and individuality.

The band’s performance at Primavera festival 2012 provided them with their first real opportunity to showcase the songs that were to comprise The New Life. The sunshine backdrop of the Spanish coastline offered a somewhat incongruous setting to the eerie dissonance of the new material, a kind of trial by fire metamorphosis rapturously received. Following a tour of Europe, the band returned home to record the album over a series of months. Having been produced by singer and songwriter, Cathal Cully, they’ve managed to capture that sense of otherness the performances at Primavera hinted at. The expansion to a four piece means the garage-clatter of the spritely pop songs of their debut have been replaced by a deeper, shadowy exercise in catharsis, driven by repetition, psychedelia and Dionysian crisis. And the record was born of a weighty concept too, as Cully explains:

“The New Life is not an over night change for Girls Names - just over two years in fact. Dead to Me literally was dead to us by the time it was committed to wax. But it's a learning curve. We started moving on as artists the moment we finished that recording session, maybe even before. Not to dwell on the past, The New Life is what happens when you reset everything back to zero and start again, but try to perfect. It starts back at zero the minute the needle hits the groove but we're also starting back from zero once the needle lifts at the end of the record. Ad infinitum. The New Life is what follows now.”

The album’s title track, and the first single to be taken from the album, is an ideal entry point. Just shy of 8 minutes long, it rotates around a hypnotic bass line, and in Cully’s evocation of renaissance, offers a perfect metaphor for the album as a whole. New single ‘Hypnotic Regression’ - available to stream here - reflects another side to the record. The reverb-heavy guitars and compelling melody are immediately memorable, but there are signs of experimentation, too; the white squall of the lead break; the uneasiness in the vocal echoes that furnish the verses. As such, The New Life, stands as a brave statement; the mark of the band untying themselves from the past and easing forth into the unknown.

The New Life will be released on February 18th on Tough Love (UK) and Slumberland (US).
