Let's Dance

Shortly after the release of Let It Flow (2014), the Smooth Jazz Symphony released a single dedicated solely to Jason Carroll's mother entitled “Special Memories.” Though the song is a dedication, it is surprisingly up-tempo  and pleasantly melodic, bringing to mind the fact that those special memories were indeed happy ones.

The song features a soothing guitar accompanied by a flute ensemble as they take listeners on a journey during the course. The verse, on the other hand, places the piano in the spotlight, even going as far as to feature a piano solo towards the middle of the song that can only be described as a barrage of perfect notes placed together intricately. All the while, the drums and a funky bass line seem to glue the composition together effortlessly.

The end result is a song that is uplifting, cool, soothing, and fresh all at the same time.

The Smooth Jazz Symphony (known in some sectors as Jason Carroll, Jason Carroll and the Smooth Jazz Symphony, or The "Prince" of Smooth Jazz) has released a third installment labeled "RIDE" (all caps a necessity) which has turned out to be an utterly delightful number. After following Carroll for years, we can honestly say that this is by far better than anything he's ever done, plain and simple. Depending on your tastes, whether you gravitate towards the uber-cool vibes of Brian Culbertson, Norman Brown, Kool & Klean, or Pieces of a Dream, this is certainly a nominee for one of the best smooth jazz albums released in a very, very long time.

This 11-track album features songs that seem fittingly yoked for the simple title. "RIDE" is a summons for listeners to cruise in their vehicles whilst listening to the sounds of the Smooth Jazz Symphony’s album. “Rush Hour,” for example, fits the bill of its title; simultaneous melodies move in conjunction during the chorus akin to vehicles moving in the same direction in heavy traffic. Additionally, there are no cut-and-dry verses. Instead, various instruments exchange slight melodic improvisational riffs in turn, creating a sense of “extremely organized chaos” for the lack of a better phrase. “Cruise Control” is another song that seems appropriately titled. Press play and press the cruise control button in your vehicle, and you’re in the exact setting you need to be.

We feel that many listeners will enjoy “Top Down” and “Backseat” most of all. It doesn’t take a genius to decipher what is suggested by the latter; sultry and divine seem to illustrate this song best. “Top Down” is one of those songs, however, that can instantly uplift an individual’s spirits. Life is good, ride with the top down. How’s that for an explanation? We really can’t think of any other way to describe it. All in all, smooth jazz fans certainly have something to look forward to this year in “RIDE.” A little side note: We don’t come across this often, but literally every track on the album is of radio eminence, and this is no exaggeration.

What beats the hell out of me is why this album is free. Maybe it’s a marketing ploy, but you rarely, if ever, see anything other than hip hop go to fans without a price. Mixtapes are commonly utilized in rap, but I can honestly say that I don’t recall ever seeing a jazz album released as a free download. But, hey, who’s complaining? Listeners certainly have nothing to lose and everything to gain with a free and excellent release. A must-buy…or must-download.

About this specific tune: For the first time with the relaxdaily project, I got a bit of musical help with this tune: My brother Jan played the acoustic guitar on this one. It's basically one riff that repeats throughout the track. You can hear it best between 0:02 and 0:14. The rest is pure relaxdaily arrangement :)
