Having minted his Snowfall imprint with the acclaimed ‘Clamor’ EP earlier this year, Ross Tones aka Throwing Snow returns on December 3rd for his second EP of 2012, the eagerly awaited ‘Aspera’. As with its predecessor, the title comes laced with Latin rhetoric: “Aspera” translating as “to make rough”, providing an apt description for the aesthetic of the four original tracks on offer. 

From the title track Tones' creative direction is clearly displayed. Hinging round a warming bass, coarse stripped back drums accompany frosty arpeggios and washed out synths atop a bed of hidden strings, whilst on ‘Melum’ flickering percussion, ethereal guitars and throbbing melodic jabs combine with Throwing Snow’s trademark distortion, culminating in an unexpected segment of footwork punctuating the track’s expansive growth.

‘Lingerwell’ sees four knackered piano chords wrapped in warm crackles and hypnotic atmospherics blooming into life with a burst of pulsating stabs, before ‘Behest’ closes the EP with a climactic slugging match of drowned drums, throbbing bass and ecclesiastical synths, and a drop to make even the most atheistic of us think again.

Snowfall is now two releases strong, and having set out with an honest mission statement we are left highly anticipating what will surface next.

Marley Carroll’s unassuming origins as a classically-trained percussionist were shattered after he took top honors at a statewide DJ battle at the prodigious age of 17. The experience catapulted him into the spotlight and catalyzed his path as an artist. In the years following, he evolved into a dynamic electronic music producer, world-class turntablist and captivating live performer with three full-length albums, multiple singles and remixes, and countless DJ sets in his cache, along with acclaimed appearances at iconic electronic music festivals like Coachella, Decibel and Moogfest.

With his 2018 album, Flight Patterns, Carroll infused his style of highly-detailed atmospheric dance music with samples and textures from the natural world, evoking comparisons to downtempo luminaries Four Tet and Boards of Canada. Bird songs, field recordings, gongs, deep basses, wooden percussion and plaintive analog synths provided the substrate for expansive instrumental songs with the kind of three-dimensional depth that invites immersive, intentional listening.

In 2022, he returned with Voices, a four-track EP inspired by the heartache of missing raving during lockdown. Like the best underground dance music of this era, Voices combines the drum-heavy intensity of the dance floor with the luminous nostalgia of late-night afters. The emotional resonance of Voices lingers long after a first listen and it seems destined to become both a DJ staple and essential listening for fans of underground dance music like DJ Seinfeld, Godford and Caribou. Voices captured the attention of prominent outlets like BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6, Radio Ibiza, KCRW and KEXP and provides a brilliant anticipatory window into what’s next for Carroll’s sound and evolution.
