Circle dances of Greece 
or how to relate with friends, allies, and strangers

Circle dances are a dream of mine.  A constant wish. 
Wherever I am, often,  I picture all the people there dancing in a circle with holding hands:
First there is this particular melody on the air, a violin. 
Then we all, magically, stand up. 
We approach each other towards an imaginary circle. 
We look each other in the eyes. Seems like we haven’t seen a human for centuries now. 
Now we have found each other again. 
We can finally be together.  

And we dance dance dance!

The existence of these particular dances is estimated thousands of years ago and are considered to be a major ritualistic form of communication.  

"The participants follow a leader around the dance floor while holding the hand of the dancers beside them. The dance can be gentle or energetic."

The Lover, ο Καύκος, is an old rizitiko song from the island of Crete. No one knows who wrote it and whether this person was a man or a woman, but this piece is one of the few deeply feminist songs of Greek traditional music.

The Lover through the senses of Maroulita de Kol is translated as an hymn to freedom.
Women free to choose. 
To live life exactly as they want it. 
As conscious pulsating free human beings.

The Water is the first single from Maroulita de Kol's debut album "Anasana" (out April 2022). 

The Water is a hymn to the feminine. It is the preparation of a  warrior that is never going to give a real battle. She is a female warrior. Her fight is of a gentle nature. She feeds from the water. Water nourishes her and gifts her with her special powers. The Water is a metaphor for the special powers that each one of us need to cultivate in order to handle the big revelations. To manifest the big changes. To discover the infinite creatures that we are. It is the first track of the album and its pianistic part is inspired by Maurice Ravel’s “jeux d’eau”.

Athens-raised, Berlin-based Maroulita de Kol creates music formed from the ancient, pre-Christian rites and practices of Greece, newly re-presented through a contemporary lens. A former student of classical piano and voice, an unbreakable bond with her homeland yielded an extensive and ongoing dive into the mythologies, arts and storytelling of ancestral Greece. These studies eventually guided her to the debut solo works that make up Anatélo and forthcoming accompanying full-length Anásana.
