AnasanA is my first solo album. It is recorded in real time on one take as one breaths.

It started from a single mantra and the mantra became a piece and the piece became an album. Kind of a spell to overcome the physical isolation of the first lockdown during Spring. Debating mostly with silence and inviting as allies my friends when I needed a reminder of togetherness and sense of self, I developed an album that decided almost by itself when to put a closure. Kafkos-The Lover, the last piece, is composed as the last blows of air of this exhalation and already consists of all the visions that come with the next breath. 

The music is a combination of improvisatory fantasies and free-association compositional techniques, each melody a droplet formed from the deluge of inspiration that comes when one least expects it. The sound world created is a combination of nature and the urban environment it was conceived in, Berlin, including elements of ethnic/indigenous music in partnership with western Classical Music. The result is the artist’s acceptance of the many worlds she have stepped in; a multiverse of music steeped in their own traditions: the Greek traditional music, classical piano technique, electronic experiments, and melodies decorated in the Greek language.

The result is a modern musical language, an extract of the deep essence of different traditions, bringing it to our contemporary world. Far from a new creation, it is a cumulation of sounds that tell the story of one woman, in one place, in one time.

Circle dances of Greece 
or how to relate with friends, allies, and strangers

Circle dances are a dream of mine.  A constant wish. 
Wherever I am, often,  I picture all the people there dancing in a circle with holding hands:
First there is this particular melody on the air, a violin. 
Then we all, magically, stand up. 
We approach each other towards an imaginary circle. 
We look each other in the eyes. Seems like we haven’t seen a human for centuries now. 
Now we have found each other again. 
We can finally be together.  

And we dance dance dance!

The existence of these particular dances is estimated thousands of years ago and are considered to be a major ritualistic form of communication.  

"The participants follow a leader around the dance floor while holding the hand of the dancers beside them. The dance can be gentle or energetic."

Circle Dances of Greece

“1 + ∞” is a minimalistic musical composition by Penelope Gkika and Maria Koltsida, which was originally composed for the theatrical play “Milch”.

The aim of the piece is to present a musical conversation in which the two instruments, piano and violin, construct a unified sonic environment that gives the impression of a continuously developing story that may never end.

The structure of “1 + ∞” is based on a series of melodic fragments that are repeated and altered throughout the course of the piece, eventually coalescing into a powerful and poignant melodic theme. The performers progress one by one through this series of loops according to their own discretion, as well as interpreting the given material  in an improvisatory fashion which is unique to each performance. As such, the piece could last anywhere from 10 minutes to days, according to the performers’ mood.

The piece has been performed in a variety of different contexts, ranging from theatrical and performative presentations of the work to traditional concert settings.

The Tree is the second single from Maroulita de Kol's debut album "Anasana" (out April 2022). 

The Tree is a hymn to human friendship. The kind of friendship that is so free, accepting and safe that creates a form of space in which we are allowed to be who we really are, to accumulate maximum growth. The kind of friendship that redefines intimacy, in an almost archetypical form. The kind of friendship that we dream of in our wishes for abundance. The kind of friendship… that feels like a morning walk in a forest.

The Water is the first single from Maroulita de Kol's debut album "Anasana" (out April 2022). 

The Water is a hymn to the feminine. It is the preparation of a  warrior that is never going to give a real battle. She is a female warrior. Her fight is of a gentle nature. She feeds from the water. Water nourishes her and gifts her with her special powers. The Water is a metaphor for the special powers that each one of us need to cultivate in order to handle the big revelations. To manifest the big changes. To discover the infinite creatures that we are. It is the first track of the album and its pianistic part is inspired by Maurice Ravel’s “jeux d’eau”.
