Kalulu - Coats

Blair Jollands is a compelling songwriter. His compositions are cinematic in scope and call to mind aspects of Nick Cave‘s songwriting, Bowie and Beck at their heartbroken best. As well as an ear for lush instrumentation, Jollands brings his award-winning sound design skills to his music, incorporating found sounds and samples into his productions. He has previously collaborated with Boy George and The Strokes producer Gordon Raphael and released albums under his alter ego El Hula. He embraces modernity with classic songwriting in equal measure resulting in a uniquely refreshing confection. He is a velvet -throated crooner with enough Dylan-esque grit to ensure there is never any danger of things getting saccharine.

We can't go back, but we're not ready to move forward either. Shungite is the song of the 'in -between'; between chaos and more chaos, between hurt and more hurt, but also between today and tomorrow where anything can happen.

Shungite is the first single from Kalulu's upcoming EP  G U I D E S  that is to be released in fall 2020. The self-produced EP reveals the sound of the introverted; a spatial, melancholic alternative dream pop sound created at home. The four songs of  G U I D E S  connect Kalulu's dots and move between them.

Kalulu is an initiative of songwriter/producer Marinka Stam. The project is designed to find inspiring collaborations to contribute to an ever-changing sound with a unique Kalulu sound signature.

Kalulu's first release 'Hoax' in 2016 explored the possibilities of electronics within a more traditional band setting. Working with some exceptional musicians and producers, it featured a diversity of musical styles and was well received by the Dutch press.
In 2019 Kalulu released "Coats”, a collaboration between Kalulu and producer Max Abel with a significant alternative EDM sound. The combination of the soulful and emotional voice of Marinka, together with the deep electronic beats and atmospheric soundscapes, give the music its own unique sound.
