This whole thing started as me doing a couple freestyles to lead up to my main project due later this year called “Only Child.” However, I realized I really want to push myself a little bit with every new project to show the growth in my creative vision both to myself and others. So, I thought about a quick project that, at the same time, embraces the cover art extensively. I named this “The Social Life EP because, for most of us, last year and still a lot of this year, sitting in our rooms in front of a laptop has been our social lives. I don’t think this even reaches 15 minutes, but regardless, any amount of time you listen is appreciated.  God willing, a full playthrough of this project will also be up on my youtube channel.

This song was the hardest one to make for me because there is so much sensitivity on the issue of beauty in dark skinned black women that I didn’t want it to feel badwagony or disingenuous. I don’t speak on strictly black topics often because, both I want my actions to speak more for me, and the fact that I’ve been spoiled by being mostly around positive black influences my whole life. I’ve been able to hear about the civil rights movement from family members who were there who almost all have had long careers with easy-going retirements. As far as black women, my family elders are also majority dark-skinned black women who commanded nothing but respect from all of us. All of these things made me feel like there was nothing to be said because I figured everyone just knew already. They don’t though, and the beauty and prominence of all black women, but especially dark skinned black women does need to be addressed and celebrated.

This song represents the long path for me gaining the confidence to accept and embrace my true ambitions. It’s tough to acknowledge and work for the things you want in life. This task only increases in difficulty I find as you get older and the pressure to grow up, get a job, and contribute to society get stronger. Well, I did and currently still am doing all those things, and those that find true happiness and satisfaction through accomplishing those tasks, great. It’s just not enough for me. Even making that last sentence public feels wrong to me in the moment. That's the reason why the other character is illustrated as a demon when the truth is they represent my ambitions.
