In defence of Halloween and the folks who love it, Here I go head-to-head with self-styled etiquette coach William Hanson, a Mail columnist who considers everything and everyone related to the spooky season as “Awful, tacky [and] common”. 

Though originally I was invited by BBC Three Counties Radio to celebrate my love of Halloween with a friendly chat on Oct 31's JVS Show, shortly before I was due to go on I received a call from the producer, informing me that I would now be sharing the air with William Hanson, a man vehemently opposed to Halloween and the people who celebrate it. Immediately prior to the show, Hanson tweeted that my annual Halloween photos were "Awful. Tacky. Common." 

Ill-prepared for our chat, having done little to no research, presenter Jonathan Vernon-Smith asked a series of clumsy, insolent questions, struggling with my name, insisting my daughter Phoebe was a boy and asking me if I displayed my daughters in the window on Halloween. 

I took none of this sitting down and feel I held my own on-air, but still, I feel the BBC owe me an apology for clumsily shanghaiing me into such an underhanded and ill-conceived bit of seasonal shock jockery.
