Sunsets on Larkin (Part One) showcases Watson at his most atmospheric, emotive and colourful best, offering a quintet of cuts rich in dreamlike electronics, lilting melodies, enveloping pads, thoughtful instrumentation and languid, laidback grooves.

The EP opens with ‘Distant Horizon’, a slowly unfurling, sunset-ready ambient soundscape in which twinkling electronic melodies, flecks of glistening electric guitar and bubbly synthesizer sounds ride waves of dreamy, sun-baked chords. It’s little less than stunning all told.

Watson reaches for gentle beats and chunky, metronomic bass on ‘Avenue of Mystery’, wrapping reverb and delay-laden percussion in eyes-closed guitar solos, more intricately arranged melodies and warming musical textures, before wrapping bongo rhythms in chiming lead lines, neo-classical style ambient chords and toasty bass on the slow-burn evening delight that is ‘Dogwood’.

Those raised on the tactile, wide-eyed and meditative ambient house sounds of the early 1990s will enjoy ‘Spirit Fingers’, where pulsing, bilious synthesizer chords and yearning, slow-motion melodies stretch out atop an Italian dream house style bass-line and leisurely electro beats. They should also savour the EP’s impeccable closing cut, too. Marked out by positive chord progressions, dreamy synth sounds, shimmering guitar motifs and a chunky Balearic disco groove, ‘Door To The Sky’ provides a fittingly colourful and blissful finale to Watson’s first EP for NuNorthern Soul.

I started making this mix series 11 years ago to celebrate my birthday and DJ anniversary.  After a short break, I am pleased to bring the tradition back to life with Twenty-Two, celebrating my 50th birthday and 22 years of DJing. I usually set a lot of rules for programming these studio mixes but I let that all go for this mix and just chose what moved me. I hope it moves you too! I found the album cover quite fitting, which was taken at my 40th at the first ShOOnanigans 10 years ago! 

I am excited to celebrate my 50th at Public Works SF on Sat 7/19! We have one of my favorite producers, Aylen, headlining along with special guests and my long-time friends Dulce Vita (Opulent Temple), Haute Mess (Brass Tax), and Nugz (Dusty Rhino). As August begins, summer's golden days are still here, full of promise and hope. As we move into the peaceful months ahead, we're excited to welcome the talented Spanish artist Pablo Bolivar to our 320th episode in the series.

“A modern master of house and techno, Seven Villas founder Pablo Bolivar is know equally well as an album artist and prolific remixer, but perhaps foremost as a world class DJ. With artistic breadth and worldwide appeal, it is clear that Pablo was born to create music, always with an attitude, and always with quality as a standard.”
Boasting more than a decade of experience releasing music, Pablo Bolívar is a name familiar to most in the underground circuit of Dance music. Born in Santander, Spain, in 1981, he took his first steps into the music business by studying Sound Engineering at Barcelona’s Crash institute, then working as an engineer for a number of years following his graduation in 2000.
After a while, Pablo began working at one of Spain’s most recognised Electronic imprints, Decoder Muzique. Following this, in 2006 he released his debut LP via Barcelona label Regular, entitled ‘Anjanas’. The 11-track album showcased his melodic, hypnotic and intriguing style of Techno that has over the years become synonymous with his name, panning between ambient sections and tougher, more club-driven moments with a real maturity and understanding of music that only comes from studying the art at its core.
In 2009, Pablo released his critically acclaimed and personal favourite LP, ‘Recall’, also via Regular. The album saw him once again nod to past influences such as Heiko Laux and his Kanzleramt label as well as other German imprints such as Chain Reaction, but also was deeply inspired by the passing of his father.
Since then, the Spaniard has gone from strength to strength, with further releases on Curle Recordings, as well as on Desolat, Culprit, Einmusika, Moodmusic, Endless as well as via his own labels, Seven Villas and Avantroots, also remixing the likes of Gui Boratto, Mario Basanov, When Saints Go Machine, Gorge, Parov Stelar or Juana Molina to name a few.
Outside of music production, the gifted Spaniard has built up a reputation for his meticulously crafted DJ performances, combining his own mesmerising Techno cuts with records unearthed from his regular excursions crate digging as well as from other artists such as Floating Points, Soulphiction, I:Cube and Vakula – modern names that he is a big personal fan of.
