October 6th was a real good day!:)  I showed up to the back entrance of a writing room just off of Music Circle in Nashville, sweating from the 100+ temps.  Climb up a flight of metal stairs, through the door...and there in this little room...is a couple of guitars with duct tape, a couch with one of the writers almost asleep on it, another guy with more energy than you'd expect from a musician at 10am....and 'sweat buckets' me, with my hair in the most ridiculous 'high pony' y'ever did see.!

I said ..."what about writing a song called Motorcycle Country.... Tommy looked over and said..."...I would absolutely NOT want to write a song called Motorcycle Country, (laughing out loud)...but I think it'd be so cool to write a song called Motorcycle....just Motorcycle....

I wrote this on October 2nd with a dude that was on The Voice.  As we discussed the emotional highs and lows of the recording artist rollercoaster...we decided to write a partial story of our lives...we shared very similar backgrounds and our struggles were the same....and we both had our names on our guitar cases....so we made sure to include that in our tune Live The Dream. If you yourself do not have your name on a guitar case.... replace the words with "....tag on your suitcase..."...we tried it...it works.;)

It was mine, and his, second write of the day.  It was going on 5:30pm... we decided that we would tackle this song title/idea I had...about what happens when you 'step out of your cowboy boots and jeans'.  I was thinking something sexy involving your lover...or something about the tough grit of a hard workin' man, or a big dance anthem kinda song..... and that's when he says... "when I hear this title...I think about crossing over....that's the only time my daddy would take off his boots n jeans...is if he was passing on."..... I stood there silent....looked at him and said..."Are you sure we want to go there?...It's 5:30 at night... and this is gonna have to take some serious attention...so that we say things..just right.  This is a very delicate subject matter"....

This was the first song I wrote during my October 2014 Nashville writing trip.  I had just come back from the north Canadian Arctic and Greenland...so my inspiration level was beyond '10'!  I wanted to write a song about getting back to the simpler things in life...the more important things in life.... the Basics.  
When I tore my ACL and had to have reconstruction on my knee, I was stopped, dead in my tracks...and forced to think about the more important things... When I travel north, into communities that don't have all the conveniences/distractions of our metropolis that we're used to, I re-appreciate the 'more important things'.

I noticed the electric guitar, sitting patiently on a stand, in the room.  I asked if he could help me write a song that had a really cool guitar riff in it.  The first thing he played, inspired this tune.  It was only until a week later, that someone said...."you wrote this with who??"..... and then said..." You know that's Eric Church's guitar player right?".....  I had no clue.... No wonder the dude could play so well:)!  

My favourite line in this tune is "...Lady Luck was smiling on me, a ten walking in at a quarter to two seems, so unlikely, but so damn right, girl...where you been all my night?"

The day before this writing session with Tim, I received a message from someone on Facebook, asking if I could write a love song.  Something she could sing to her husband as they danced.

I brought this to the table, and Tim and I both felt like this was a good idea to tackle!  So we wrote...Three Little Words.  Most of the chorus lines...are only 3 words long:)

We smiled the whole way through this song!  Dave Tompson...the guy from WAVE!!  A Canadian pop band from, I'm thinking, mid 2000's.  I had no idea I was gonna write with 'that' guy!!!  I showed up at the door, in this cool part of Nashville, and to my surprise, greeted by not only a fellow Canadian, but a guy, that I know a lot of my friends respect as an artist and songwriter, in the business:)

I wanted to take advantage of the fact that Jessie Jo was gonna bring the female perspective...and Matt had a cool pop feel....So..I mentioned I wanted to write an upbeat love song!  From the second those words came out...the excitement to write this song started!

The Year Of The Dane

Marshall Dane’s infectious blend of country and rock is set to blaze a trail in the summer of 2013. Country by definition, but fueled by rock and roll and infected with a watermelon-sized helping of hope, love and salvation, Marshall’s the kind of guy you want to have on your side when the going gets tough in this world and his new album “One Of These Days” is set to be your alibi.

Set for launch in May, in time for this year’s CMAO Awards - for which he has been nominated in several categories including Male Artist and Rising Star - and featuring the new single “One Of These Days”, Canadian Country Artist Marshall Dane’s latest album puts life back in to the swing of things, driven by a swirling blast of fabulous melodies that gives you a country rush right from the get-go.

 “One Of These Days is about how I deal with the curves life throws,” says Marshall. “It’s not really about where I’ve been but more so about where I am now...where I wanna go...and how I'm gonna get there, wherever 'there' is. “

One of These Days has country in its veins topped up with doses of rock, pop and a side helping of soul.  This latest collection is never far away from a radio-friendly corner, whether it’s the thrill of “Living It Up” or the reflective energy of “How Do I Get There From Her.”

Recorded in London, Ontario across June of 2012, “One Of These Days” is the 
follow-up to Marshall’s successful Running Stop Signs, released in 2010.

Born in Southern Ontario, Marshall grazed on a rich fix of music, from the country sounds of his preacher dad – “He first taught me how to play “The Farmer’s Song” on guitar” – through his mum – in his own words the strongest, toughest, hardest working woman he’s ever met – who played piano in the evenings to his four sisters and two brothers and through his own musical discoveries from Johnny Denver to Michael Jackson – “Thriller was the first album I bought, on cassette!”

Playing his first solo gig at 15 for thirty five bucks and a plate of cheesecake, Marshall tried working in a band before eventually taking fate in to his own hands in 2008 and headed down to Nashville for a master-class in composing country songs.

“Best move ever!” he roars recalling how he quickly got to know the country music capital’s song writers and music publishers. Within nine months he had gathered a repertoire of exciting new tunes. “I was encouraged to submit a song for a local songwriting competition at a country radio station,” he recalls with a grin. “Low and behold I won the contest.  The prize?  To open up for Emerson Drive and perform for an audience of country music fans.”

 

His appearance bagged him a deal with The Agency Group, opening for Alan Jackson in 2010, a tour in early 2011 and then a nomination to represent the New Artist Showcase at the 2011 CCMA's.

 “I’ve been playing the circuit for a few years, consistently making sure to deliver a first class performance til the last note, even if the club had only four people in it! I'd rock it as best I could, hoping that one day someone who could change things and bring me to the next level would walk right in.”

That’s just what happened in June 2011 when Don Burton (The Cranberries/Gold Lake (w/Danny Goldberg) and "The Beav" caught his act. “I can even tell you the time,” he laughed, “it was 1:55am on June 21st! They heard one and half songs and the rest is history.”

Purposely influencing the musical presence on the album, “One Of These Days” features a range of new musicians in the Dane recording household.  "Producer Dan Brodbeck introduced me to Jeff Fountain (bass), Corey Thompson (drums) and Mike Bonnell (keys) and I introduced him to Doug Johnson (steel) and Shane Guse (fiddle).  The combination was intense.  Amazing."

While Marshall will always prefer the live stage to the vocal booth he believes the “One Of These Days” sessions have turned out to be his best work to date.
“I was excited to explore a different studio, producer and styles.  I wanted to see what the other players would bring to the recording.  I was blown away with the results.”

Of the songs on the album Marshall says “None of them were fleshed out before going into studio other than the fact that I knew them inside and out acoustically. Dan left me lots of room for creativity and all of “the happy accidents” where you just explore for a bit.”

Playing in bars and clubs as a solo singer and with a touring band – has given him his fair share of stories and insights - great for writing songs. On days off however, he prefers to spend his time out of the bar - in the gym, on his motorcycle, practicing yoga or at home in his apartment “cooking up something scrumptious.”

But when it comes to cooking up a tune, Marshall admits there is one source of soul-nourishment that keeps on giving.

 “More and more I find the influences of my parents’ spiritual upbringing permeating my writing.  Mostly the positive stuff like hope, and love, and kindness....you know - the fruitages of the spirit. “

Marshall Dane has been slowly bubbling up to this moment. With “One Of These Days” set for release, 2013 promises to be the Year Of The Dane.

My Mama Told Me To Record This, So I Did - All My Life

Marshall Dane is not your typical Artist / Songwriter.

Marshall's talent has to-date earned him five nominations for Male Artist of the Year at the Country Music Association of Ontario Awards.
