A cold and fearsome hello to Expressivo's Halloween Video #62 Premiere called Halloween Shivers! Music to Haunt!  I hope you have followed the past three videos showing the creation of each melody, in essence, creating the characters of this devilish, grim musical story.  In this video, I offer the culmination of the themes, their motifs, and various textures to create a tense and sinister sound.  This is all to help celebrate the arts in all of us in learning from each other.

This eerie tone poem describes the performance of egos between a musical couple, a violinist and a pianist.  The music flows through the 11 sections, which involves even... murder, to finish with the haunting.  I'll label each section as it comes up. Then, play the entire piece, if possible, to hear a large variety of sounds from different StaffPad libraries. There are some unusual combinations of sounds.

Welcome to Expressivo's MusicTech video #69, Autumnal Awakening.  In this video, I’ve created a descriptive piece of music focusing on the Autumn themes with particular attention to cheeky squirrels.  Using StaffPad with iPad, I prepare this piece over the course of a month.

The music has an introduction welcoming the Autumn months, Fall colours, and tumbling leaves.  The time signature of ⅞ adds an odd rhythmic lilt that lends itself to the quirky motions of squirrels.  The strings later take a motif of the theme supported by the woodwinds.  The four French Horns rambunctiously introduce a brassy new theme empowering the cheeky squirrels playfully jumping from branch to fences and then, telephone lines.  You will hear a cackle of crows laughing at the squirrels motion, represented by muted trumpets.  As if in response, the squirrels taunt the crows reflected in a seductive violin melody taken from the previous section with portamento slides and a brief chromaticism.  The piece gently comes to an end with a restatement of the first theme played on the oboe.

The presentation uses 3 music creation apps namely Finale, Dorico and StaffPad to show a connection of orchestral score to piano reduction and scrolling score playback.  I highly recommend a look at these apps to see which fit into your notation and compositional methods.

Autumnal Awakening

For several years, because of numerous reasons, I wasn’t really keen on the Christmas season.
This changed this summer of 2022 when I started to look forward to it. As Christmas approached I was more excited and wrote a simple Christmas piece for chamber orchestra. The piece quotes some portions of traditional Christmas songs.
