No division between 'absolute' and 'applied' music -- that's the way it has always been for Manuel de Sica. Here we have the chance to explore the oeuvre of this contemporary Italian composer, best known for his contributions to the world of film; Il giardino dei Finzi Contini, the last track on the release, won an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score.

Much of De Sica's work centres around the themes of pain and suffering, where music is invested with the power to help alleviate the indifference that surrounds so much human grief - as in pieces such as Kojiki. The titles translates "News form ancient times". This is a short symphonic poem inspired by the bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1941. The story told regards the childhood, adolescence and death of a kamikaze pilot, of the kind who might have taken part in the bombing. The final dance describes his assent to the empyrean world of his ancestors.

Performing this music is the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, one of Italy's most important symphony orchestras and which has appeared under conductors of the calibre of Charles Dutoit, Lorin Maazel and Kurt Masur -- to name but a few. The ensemble provides the background to a wonderfully lively instrumental fantasy in which the harp, violin, viola and piano -- here astutely performed Floraleda Sacchi, Maristella Patuzzi, Anna Serova and Michelangelo Carbonara respectively -- becomes the soloists in a fascinating, wide-reaching musical fabric. This premiere performance was conducted by Robert Carnochan on 2/19/23 at the CBDNA Conference, Athens, GA.

Materia Prima was commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra and was premiered on March 16, 2023 by Daniela Candillari and the American Composers Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

Materia Prima draws inspiration from the mythological motif of the cosmic ocean. This motif, which can be found in the creation stories of a strikingly wide variety of cultures and religions, describes a cosmic ocean of primordial, often chaotic waters from which the universe was created. The title, Materia Prima (Latin for prime, or original matter) refers to the substance viewed as the material cause of the universe.

There are two musical elements that form my piece, sustained sounds and brief impulses. The impulses act as drops of water in a still, vast sea, creating waves of activity that disrupt the stability of the sustained material. The harmonic structure of the piece is built upon a similar opposition, one between the harmonic series of a low B-flat and the open strings of the string instruments, particularly the open A – the note from which the entire piece emerges. The piece unfolds through gradual processes of transformation as it attempts to reconcile these opposing materials. At its core, Materia Prima strives to find serene spaces in a turbulent and chaotic world.
