Redshape Era

A spontaneous mid-week recording I did recently at home in Berlin before setting off to Cuba. 

It ended up taking me in an unexpectedly heady direction, with ebbs of dubby plateaus (Side note: Of course I had to fit in Concave 2 into this mix just like any other mixes over these past months. When Tresor repressed the Juan Atkins & Moritz von Oswald release this past summer, it captured a lot of my attention; though I admittedly purchased it digitally as that works better for me for the time being.) and points of fast acceleration such as through the medium of linear.system coming via Edit Select. The track follows on from @Anders-Hellberg’s Microbiome; looks like I've managed to fit in two tracks from his Cinus label into the mix actually. 

The catchy opening lines are of course none other’s than courtesy to deary JesseSiminski x Desires Systems @heartthrob!

Some other tunes I have been trying out a lot since the summer and so it makes sense they found their way into the mix were Lockdown (hardly a new release from legend Shinedoe. Seeing her perform at Fusion last summer made me really feel it on another level though and that track is so curious to me), Another Place by Third Wife @333wife333 that I came across listening back through all their releases prompted by a conversation with my friend @Zolastrasse. 

Lewis Fautzi’s modern humans has likely been hanging around my collection the longest – it’s from the 4 or 5 vinyl–heavy Figure 100 anniversary release in 2018. I had started buying vinyl only a few months before that. Other tracks I’ve been coming back to for a while were from Abstract Division and Session restore. A final mention that is likely not needed is old but gold Disaffected by Sandwell District – most people will likely be focussed exciting news from the legends.

Concluding Retrogrades

A set in honour of my talented friend Lilian Kroth. She spent years in an intuitively–informed dialogue with French philosopher Michel Serres. The art she created in the process just came out collectively in the book "Alignments: Drawing as a Way of Thinking". The beautiful cover image for this track provides a glimpse into the book (Copyright with Lilian Kroth). 

For the book launch at the contemporary art space FriArt in Fribourg, Switzerland on 18 April, Lilian invited me to interpret her art through my sound. Feeling into the assigment for quite some time beforehand, it ended up coming together very intuitively. Short and sweet with much progression. 

I especially enjoyed seeing some long–time collection pieces find their way into the mix. The first time I was able to pay due credit to my 2012 Om Unit obsession in a set! Might be time to bring it back. Another highlight was Olafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm – A1 moving into Iridescent (Pugilist & Pod), a more recent purchase, beautifully dubby track I've managed to already play up and down this year heh.

Live recording in one piece of my set at this year’s @ZugderLiebe demo parade in support of Authentic Streetfood e.V., a very close version of it that is. 
Really needed to share this mix to wrap this summer spiritually and energetically. This meant resisting to make a polished version; this would stray from the feeling and spirit of the event itself, and be untrue to the urgency of the moment I recorded this in.

The mix is driving, as I played at a high point of energy in the early evening. Also, I only had one hour that needed to be filled it with many ideas and vibes :D 
The mood could not be anything other than both fun and nostalgic, and sure, a little silly. It’s my take on the spirit of demo-parades of Berlin present & past. Only while playing at Zug der Liebe I really understood through feeling into it: The demo-parades are part of what made Berlin into what it continues to be for many of us. 

ON SELECTION:
The mix starts off even more nostalgic than I’d planned, the first track (Day of Rebirth by Resistance D, very much 1990ies) forced its way into this recording. I love how Dorisburg-esquey it blends into the next track (that had been the first track when I played it out). That one may sound retro, but is in fact a recent Permanent Vacation release by Eliott Litrowski that I came across through browsing their catalogue. 

As this is a pretty “track-based mix”, I want to share some of what’s inside. During Zug der Liebe, playing “Sequel”, a recent one by Answer Code Request & Paul Claude, was a great moment for me & made me feel safe, settled playing for so many people. 
A very sassy moment was had with BELLA’s Odd Symphony (Olsvangèr Remix) Sally C’s Chunkers. Felt inspired to attempt a daring transition out of this one. 
Some other ones I want to mention: Libertad, Danny Wabbit remix – a Room Trax release from a few years ago, taking over from Neo Romance by Stephanie Sykes from a 2022 release on Ellen Allien’s We Are Not Alone. 
I enjoy the visceral energy of Dengue by Maōh from his Yucatán release; will have to look dig through his releases. 

Earlier in the mix are two tracks by a couple of duos I recently came across, one is NAP92; another is by Catalunian Iro Aka, they came to me via Lena Willikens who closed the outdoors floor at Fold Else, the queer party series taking over in Berlin in early July. Lots of great discoveries that day, loved the sets by FOLD crew Gareth Wild & Lockhart, all new to my ears. 

Steffi’s “Individuals from all Walks” (Rosati Remix) needed to be in both for name and feeling obviously. 

And definitely went there with a huge load of trance-nostalgia to close off, and yes Cafe del Mar was necessary. The last track is from a release on Pablo Bozzi’s Second Sight from March this year. The track was produced by Miguel de Bois & came to me via Spacer Woman during a funny moment at a very fun summer outing.

I played for Authentic Streetfood e.V., a Berlin-based charity collective with a mission to distribute sustainable meals to the homeless, and organising fundraisers for humanitarian emergencies in Gaza and elsewhere.
