Moon Harbour marks its historic 20th anniversary with a 10-track compilation of all new music. It features old friends like Marlow and Luna City Express, icons like Steve Bug and Butch and new signings like Black Circle, so it is a fine representation of the label's famous sound. 

Matthias Tanzmann founded Moon Harbour in 2000, and since then it has been at the forefront of the tech house scene. Even in the face of the major shift from vinyl to digital, a distributor going bankrupt and the coronavirus pandemic, careful A&R and Matthias's own productions have ensured the label has remained utterly relevant. The Leipzig label has released countless EPs, LPs and compilations and hosted label showcases all over the world. It has nurtured the careers of artists like Sable Sheep and Ekkohaus and has given a vital platform to new stars like Miane, Detlef and many more. 

"Evolution is a natural process and important to artists as well as to labels," explains Matthias. "Music is always redefined and subject to trends. New generations of musicians want to create their own identities through their sound. As a label, we listen to a lot of new music and try to stay open-minded within our own aesthetic range."

After a year of re-releasing classics from the label's back catalogue, the 20 Years of Moon Harbour compilation is all about fresh and exclusive music. It kicks off with Andrea Oliva's 'Return To The Dancefloor,' a bumping cut driven by naughty bass before raw percussive energy from ANEK and tense cosmic melody Black Circle. Butch layers up tribal grooves and exotic vocals, then Luna City Express mark the mid-point with the steamy house of 'Mami Wata' featuring Sunru's soulful vocals. 

Marlow throws it back with some old school piano energy on 'Corktown,' Matthias nails a perfectly slinky tech house groove on 'Binford' and Ninetoes' 'Polanco Hills' ups the pace and drives forwards. Closing out is the punchy and stripped back house of Steve Bug's 'Going Up' and Sven Tasnadi's loopy and hypnotic 'Cuckoo.'

This essential collection is further proof that Moon Harbour continues to shape the sound of contemporary European house music. Here's to the next 20 years.

On the back of ‘Draw the Line’, his acclaimed release on Hot Creations and a recent ‘Future Heroes’ segment on BBC Radio 1, DeMarzo delivers his first release on rising UK label Underground Audio with the mammoth ‘Crazy / Original Mixtape’.

A highly touted artist born and bred in Leeds, UK, DeMarzo’s passion for music stretches back to a childhood punctuated by his father’s soul and Motown records leading him to study the keyboard at age 8. Throughout his childhood he spent time playing in bands, while honing his production skills with a music technology course at college, never deviating from his goal of devoting his life to music creation.

Production breakthroughs would occur with tracks and remixes released on the likes of Noir, 2DIY4, Warung Recordings, Acid Fruits and Digital Delight, among others. Of particular note were on-point remixes of Finnebassen’s ‘What You Do’ on NastyFunk and Walker & Royce’s ‘I Surrender’ on Glasgow Underground that piqued the ears of fans and critics alike, while his re-rub of Compuphonic & Kolombo’s ‘Sand Storm’, with its intricate rhythmic sequences proved DeMarzo’s skill as a music-maker was improving with every track.

Ever the perfectionist, he still wasn’t satisfied and so came ‘Draw the Line’ on Hot Creations – an example of him literally drawing a line under all his previous work and pushing his productions to a new and more refined level. The track’s deep, groove-driven floor-moving vibes was an undoubted sonic bullseye as the cut peaked at no.3 in Beatport Deep House charts and no.20 overall.

DeMarzo’s latest creation ‘Crazy’ / ‘Original Mixtape’ continues his quest to take his production output to new levels. Already premiered on BBC Radio 1 during his Future Heroes segment, ‘Crazy’ is a heavy-hitting, multi-layered bullet injected with double-thick layers of techno percussion and the mother of all synth stabs that’s cherry ripe for decimating dancefloors.

On the flip ‘Original Mixtape’ is the attitude-packed little brother and a swinging house cut with a sly acid undercurrent that makes the perfect funk-fuelled accompaniment to its more high octane accomplice.

Citizenn is the moniker of London (via Nottingham) based artist Laurence B. Taking his name from a passing visual reference in the Manga film Akira Citizenn originally arrived via releases on MadTech, the label owned by New Jersey house don Kerri Chandler. Within a year, after singles on Waze & Odyssey’s Street Tracks, 20/20 Vision as well as on the label extension of Love Fever, his favourite underground party, Citizenn had been named DJ Magazine’s Breakthrough DJ of 2013. 

As the musical journey continued, 6 am stints at Berlin's infamous Panorama Bar and a globe-trotting diary taking him from Japan, Tulum, Kiev and everywhere in between, he distilled all these new experiences into his debut LP on Damian Lazarus’s ever-influential Crosstown Rebels imprint. The album entitled 'Human Interface' dealt with themes of human intersectionality with our mechanical counterparts through a tapestry of the tightly wound house and techno influenced an EP, the records receiving national radio play and praise from his peers. Citizenn has been a mainstay at popular Ibiza hotspots such as DC10, Blue Marlin and Sankeys for the quickly growing Abode brand of which he has also released with.

Citizenn has found a clarity of vision within the circus that is life as a successful musician.

Martin Buttrich is famously as fluent behind a mixing console as in front of a virtual drum kit. That technical prowess, combined with a fascination for music of every shape, has resulted in outstanding releases on influential labels such as Planet E, Four:Twenty, Cocoon, Poker Flat, Nervous and Desolat. He’s also put his sonic thumbprint on many big ticket artists, notably receiving a Grammy nomination for a Tori Amos remix in 2003. Such diverse musical horizons are rare. While other prolific artists may have slowly watered down their music, Buttrich’s star has risen in diametric opposition. His vision has become more and more condensed, more and more crystallised. Flipping and puncturing grooves in a live setting is a snap for him, and he’s entranced audiences at festivals like Time Warp and Creamfields, at temples of boom such as Fabric (London), Womb (Tokyo), Cocoon (Frankfurt), Panorama Bar (Berlin) and Amnesia (Ibiza) and at worldwide Desolat Experience parties with Loco Dice.

Buttrich’s journey into electronic music began in clubs in Berlin and Hannover at the dawn of the ‘90s, when post-Summer of Love-Europe began to swing to its own hypnotic, machine-like groove. At 18 years old he began experimenting with production as X-Rotation (with Daniel Bross), which led to the projects Rhythm Assault, Sounds of Life and Phunk Diggazs (with engineer Andy Bolleshon).

Buttrich began a notorious collaboration with his then co-worker at Peppermint Jam distribution, Timo Maas, in the mid-‘90s (they worked the telephones together). After setting up his first studio in the basement of the Peppermint Park studio building, the partnership led to over 100 co-productions and remixes that included Madonna, Muse, Fatboy Slim. Josh Wink and Green Velvet. Buttrich has produced funk legend Bootsy Collins, while switching the patterns for artists including Tom Jones, Kelis, Moloko, Depeche Mode, Placebo, Yello, War and Roger Sanchez. His Azzido Da Bass “Dooms Night” remix with Timo Maas hit the UK top ten charts.
 
All the while he created an impressive library of beats and collected an arsenal of music production equipment for his studio in Timetools, a studio complex founded in 1997 in Hannover with a group of musicians. Buttrich is happy with the subtle crunch of an SP-12 sampler and the ‘smoky’ vibe of his analog mixing desk – adding a bass guitar or other instrument when necessary. But he’s not above having fun with a laptop either: approaching music programs as if they were video games. He doesn’t rely on any one machine or music composition technique, and his array of outboard gear is mouth-wateringly state of the art.
But he never loses touch with the gritty, human side of music, and the environments that it is played in.

Another key musical partnership, with Loco Dice, begun in 2002, undoubtedly inspired Buttrich to delve deeper into the musical histories that first lured him towards after-dark melodies. In a short space of time they’d built up a deep discography creating an era-defining sound in the process. They spent more than half a year living in New York in 2006/2007, with half of Buttrich’s studio set up in a rickety hideaway in Brooklyn that looked out over Manhattan’s vistas. Between late night production sessions and snowstorms, their Desolat label came to life.

Having his debut solo album Crash Test released on Desolat in early 2010, Martin Buttrich is taking his vision to the road, fusing wild imagination with solid musical architecture, cherry-picked inspiration with true perfection of his musical craft. 

Since then constantly on tour, in 2011 Martin Buttrich still has dropped a remarkable collection of music - productions like “Fire Files” EP on Desolat or remixes for Marco Carola and Lee Curtis amongst others.

Currently based in LA, Martin Buttrich is working on his second artist album and a jazz project called The Stoned Autopilot.
