Oh Yeah

My plan was to not remix, but re-play the song in a full live setting, as if in 1975 Bowie recorded the original and then flew to Brooklyn (or even Jamaica) to cut another take with my players. Everything was recorded 100% analog to tape. All on equipment that was available before 1975. My approach was to take influence of the Jamaican musicians (and recording styles) of the mid-seventies, and their infatuation with American Soul music. If you dig it, that would be great. Knowing that BOWIE digs it, I’m over the moon.

Visage has also been one part Fashion & Style and one part music. With the first single from the album "Shameless Fashion" encapsulates both those components. The subject matter addresses some of the darker sides of the Fashion industry. It's a world that Steve Strange has lived and breathed. It can burn with the brightness of lights but it also has the painfully-sweet dark underbelly as well. 

Sound wise the track takes a aural hint from the bands 1982 hit the "The Anvil". Raucous Synth-bass and (real) drums provide the body to the song. These are augmented with distorted hooky guitars which power the chorus along. This track (as with all of the album) was made on analog and vintage gear with no soft synths in sight. Visage in the past have added in some international language variations and with "Shameless Fashion" is no exception. The package features German, French, Italian and Japanese flavored versions.

With keyboards, drums and tempo to match “She’s Electric (Coming Around)” strays into Fade
To Grey territory. Ethereal pads, haunting vocals and ambient textures all form to create a slightly menacing soundscape. The track is 100% pure analog keyboards, no computers or soft-synths in here. From the CR78 beats, the Jupiter 8 stabs and the Mick Macneill solo line. “One”, “Two” shout the crowd… “She is coming around”. But who is the “She” and where is she coming from?

Visage - Shes Electric (Coming Around) [clip]

In “I am Watching” Steve adopts the persona of an obsessive stalker. Not natural territory we are
assured. It is usually Steve who is the one who is being stalked. “I do this all for you now” pleads the character as he tries to help the victim get through ”their” problem. The song hangs upon Robins slicing guitar and structure, while the bassline and beats provide the main dance-floor inspired moments on the album.

Visage produced their first tracks at Martin Rushents Genetic studio and Martin had started
working with the band in 2010 before his timely untimely death. The production and album track
placement position of “On We Go” is influenced by “I Am The Law” from Human Leagues “Dare”. The slow, thoughtful, synthesizer sound-scape is the calming tonic that breaks the pace of the first four songs on the album. The lyrics talk of character-changing, momentous events that shape the characters we are and who we evolve into.

“Dreamer I Know” is the most immediately accessible song on the album and features a catchy adult-pop chorus which imprints rapidly. Mick Macneil (the former creative musical core of Simple Minds) adds the lead keyboard lines which although played on an old Korg analog monosynth somehow manage to evoke his Scottish homeland.

“Hidden Sign” is the first song on the album to highlight the masterful bass playing of Steve
Barnacle. The clean amped bass line and the 80s beats and grooves propel this song along. The lyrics talk about the over analysis of a love affair bringing it to the point of collapse. Does it survive? Draw your own conclusion.
