I recorded this track of Steve Swallow's masterpiece "Falling Grace" with Pittsburgh guitarist Eric Susoeff on March 22, 2017, as the first of a hoped for nine new tracks for a jazz guitar duet cd of straight ahead jazz, the tentative title: _Mainstream Believers_. This is my first attempt at recording since I started playing again after a thirty year hiatus.  An original arrangement of "My Funny Valentine" which I wrote in homage to the famous recording of Bill Evans and Jim Hall on the album _Undercurrents_, I was lucky enough to have the incomparable Eric Susoeff play the second guitar on this track.  Thanks also to Mark Perna who mixed the balances for the track.  When I started playing again, I decided to put aside the ECM styles of ensemble playing to learn the tradition in a systematic way, under the guidance of Eric.  Jim Hall and Bill Evans are my favorite players in the traditional vein.

This is my first foray into recording, with Pittsburgh guitarist Eric Susoeff, since I returned to playing guitar after a 30 year hiatus.  This is another version of my Be Bop arrangement of "My Funny Valentine," and I hope to be recording a number of jazz standards and originals this Fall.

My Funny Valentine, Take 4

I am an independent scholar living in Pittsburgh. I write about the history of emergence as a concept; about competing models of time and the ideological, aesthetic, social and political stakes of dominance and resistance, as well as the scientific and theological origins of fascism; embodied and distributed cognition and the arts, particularly the work of Marcel Duchamp, Kiki Smith, the dance troup Pilobolus, the architecture of Arakawa and Gins, and jazz performance; and about the agency of metaphor in trans-disciplinary inquiry. Some of the writers, artists, musicians, scientists and philosophers I have written about include Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, Thomas Pynchon and Phillip K. Dick, Samuel Beckett, Sam Shepard; Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Robert Smithson, Kiki Smith, Arakawa and Gins; John Cage, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Dave Holland; Henri Bergson, Henri Poincare, Sigmund Freud, Mikhail Bakhtin, Walter Benjamin, Merleau-Ponty, Albert Einstein and John Wheeler, Richard Feynman, Ilya Prigogine, Henri Atlan, Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela, Edwin Hutchins, Jean Petitot, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. I also play jazz guitar, and have written numerous jazz compositions, and have begun performing again in the Pittsburgh area, a jazz town, rich and deep in history and talent.

I recently published Part One of a projected book entitled _Jazz and Emergence_, which examines the interior experiences within AND amongst jazz musicians improvising, in the scholarly journal _INFLEXIONS_ (http://www.senselab.ca/inflexions/volume_4/n4_rosenberghtml.html). Part Two is close to completion.

With Jondi Keane of Griffith University, Brisbane AU, I co-directed the first completely digital global humanities conference-- AG3-Online: The Third International Arakawa and Gins: Architecture and Philosophy Conference -- which ran from March 12-26, 2010 with concluding celebrations at Barnard College April 30, and at The Solomon Guggenheim Museum, May 1, where I gave the inaugural keynote. 

These tracks represent my first attempts to record, after quitting jazz for thirty years.  I wrote this arrangement of My Funny Valentine, as an homage to the Bill Evans and Jim Hall recording on the album _Undercurrents_, and was lucky to have friend and teacher Eric Susoeff perform the second guitar part.  Nothing fancy, just two mikes, with some balance mixing by my friend bassist Mark Perna, so think of this recording as a snapshot of where  I am in the process of getting back up to speed.  I'm quite happy about the arrangement, although the execution less so--although Eric sounds, as usual, wonderful!
