I recently picked up a new iOS app, apeMatrix, which acts as a host for audio unit instruments and effects on iOS.



Unlike BeatMaker, which is focused on emulating a groove box, this app acts like a mixing board, and that's all.  You can't use it to make a track, other than recording audio out.  You can record audio directly in the app, but I ran the audio into my laptop, so I could record the video with the audio.


I have an Akai MPK225 and a Casio CTK3200 used as MIDI controllers for my iPad.  The Casio is doing most of the work, acting as a basic drum sequencer, as well as a keyboard.  The Akai is only used for drum pads on the intro.


ApeMatrix presents a grid / "matrix" of connections to route MIDI and audio.  You can actually have up to 3 grids, but I just loaded everything into one grid, keeping the drum and keyboard parts isolated.


The pads on the Akai and the rhythm part of the Casio are coming in on MIDI channel 10, and sent to the 808 emulation "Ruismaker" drum audio unit (AU), which is then routed / mixed with the output of the "Kosmonaut" delay effect AU.


The keys from the Casio are coming in on channel 1, then sent into the "Rozeta" MIDI effect AU to have the lower notes duplicated an octave down.  Notes above the middle of the keyboard or so are sent without the extra lower octave part.  The resulting MIDI is sent into the "Laplace" AU to provide a string-like synth, layered with the "bs-16i" AU to provide a basic piano romple.  These are then mixed through the "Blackhole" reverb effect AU.


These are all good iOS plugins, highly recommended.
