The Machine is about being trapped in the corporate system, working for "The Man" and dreaming of getting out and living a simpler life.  Mournful vocals overlay grinding industrial sounds and pulsing guitar effects. Relief comes from folky acoustic guitars and dreamy synths before bursting into an uplifting chorus that affirms we are meant to be free. 

I wrote this song whilst working for a corporation, which was slowly destroying and sucking the life out of me.  I felt this couldn’t be what life was all about, so I wanted to make a break, to change things so that I could live a life where I called the shots  -  in essence, a life free of the Machine.

The "Erosion & Evolution" EP is a collecton of 5 songs exploring change ... needing to make a change, loss of what we used to have, personal growth and acceptance of what one cannot change.

This song was actually written a long time ago but it still resonates with me now. When you are young and you have your whole life ahead of you, you think that life is full of magic and wonder and that the friends you have will always be in your life and amazing things will happen. As you get older, you realise that a lot of life is mundane - working a job, paying bills, just "getting by" - it's not what you expected and you feel like there was no warning. You wonder if maybe the best days of your life are behind you and all you have are the memories - the "snapshots" in your mind.
I was moved to record this old song after the death of my father last year. His passing really brought home to me that life is short and unpredictable, and that all you can do is try your best.

"Calling Out My Name" was conceived in late summer of 2018. I was driving to my partner Lauren's place and thinking of her whilst listening to the instrumental track "Far Away Trains Passing By" by Ulrich Schnauss. I started to hum a melody along to it and the words "calling out my name" fell out. The main chord progression is based upon the Ulrich Schnauss track.

Lyrically, I drew on some thoughts I'd had whilst meditating about what we perceive as being gaps between physical objects, but that are actually filled with frequencies, atoms, energy and  light. So everything is really fully connected and there aren't any gaps between anything at all! The lyrics were also inspired by a dream I had about Lauren and I flying together over oceans and mountains.
 
The song is in essence about being in love with someone and being connected with that person  even though you may not physically be with them . It's about thinking of that person more than anyone else, it just feeling right and that something intangible is pulling you together.

Calling Out My Name

For English singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Martin Paul Cuthew, music is a mix of catharsis and celebration. His meditations on love, hope and longing are set against bright sonic colours and warm, rich tones - a foundation of acoustic-rock vocal/guitar is enriched with bold synths and beats to form gutsy pop-rock songs that have drawn comparisons with Frank Turner, Mat Kearney and Peter Murphy.

Martin played keys and guitar from a young age, absorbing Pink Floyd, Metallica and Smashing Pumpkins and  electronic acts Orbital and The Prodigy. However, it was Oasis and Coldplay that first inspired him to write songs and take music seriously. Since then, he's performed all over South-East England, including legendary London venues the Half Moon Putney and Brixton Jamm, and at the international Greenbelt Festival.

Martin's first 4 singles were all released to positive reviews and international radio airplay and last year he performed at the Gosport Waterfront Festival. He's now expanding his sound with his 'Erosion & Evolution' EP - described by KMS Reviews as "an outstanding emotional work". Lead single, The Machine, had A&R Factory proclaiming "... the luminously humanist soul projected through the lyrics and optimism-inspiring vocals spoke to [us] on a level that normally only James Dean Bradfield reaches."

Martin recently released the EP's 2nd single, Holding On, and will appear this Summer at The Portsmouth Chilli & Gin Festival, The Epsom Derby weekend and Marlow Rock Bottom Festival.
