Pretty laid back, this started out with bass and drums and seemed to need go somewhere. The simple piano melody in the middle section is a grouping of 5-notes but off-set by 1/16 and then various delays added.

Kurze Beschreibung

Ich habe Klanglandschaft/Soundscape Maa im April 2025 speziell für den SONIC PLANET-Wettbewerb der DEGEM (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Elektroakustische Musik) und dessen vorgegebenes Thema "Sonic Planet" geschaffen.

Die Komposition verbindet Alltagsgeräusche wie Schritte auf verschiedenem Untergrund, das Zerreissen von Papier, Streichholz anzünden, Tennisspielen, Händeklatschen, Pferdegetrappel, Maschinengeräusche und ähnliches mit Stimmsamples aus meinem Archiv, die mir vor einiger Zeit die niederländische Mezzo-Sopranistin Jannie Pranger zur Verfügung gestellt hat, und von denen einige wenige elektronisch verfremdet sind. 

Diese beiden Komponenten sind dicht verwoben und bilden eine spannungsvolle, vielschichtige und facettenreiche Musique concrète. 

Die Alltagsgeräusche werden genauso behandelt wie die vokalen Klänge; so wie man beispielsweise mit Klängen von Perkussionsinstrumenten umgeht, die ja auch grösstenteils geräuschhaft sind. Ein Trommelwirbel, Beckenzischen, Ratsche... oder eben eine elektrische Säge, eine knarrende Tür, zersplitterndes Glas, der Abschlag eines Golfballs, ein Bienenschwarm u.s.w. Die einbezogene Mezzo-Sopran-Stimme ist äußest vielfältig. Schnalz- oder Zischlaute, Flüstern, Sprechen, Singen, Pfeifen, Atmen und alle erdenklichen Töne, die stimmlich möglich sind, kommen vor.

Die Erde ist der bisher einzige bekannte Planet, der klingt; wo man ununterbrochen von Lauten und Geräuschen umgeben ist, die Menschen und Tiere, Wind, Wasser etc. erzeugen. Einen winzigen Ausschnitt dieser einzigartigen klanglichen Vielfalt des Planeten Erde wollte ich in meiner Komposition darstellen und feiern. Das Wort Maa im Titel ist das finnische Wort für Erde/Land.

Die Komposition Klanglandschaft/Soundscape Maa wurde von der internationalen Jury des SONIC PLANET-Wettbewerbs ausgewählt und wird auf der DEGEM-CD 25 veröffentlicht.

Short description

I created Klanglandschaft/Soundscape Maa in April 2025 especially for the SONIC PLANET competition of DEGEM (German Society for Electroacoustic Music) and its given theme “Sonic Planet”. 

The composition combines everyday sounds such as footsteps on different surfaces, the tearing of paper, lighting a match, playing tennis, clapping hands, horses clattering, machine noises and the like with voice samples from my archive, which the Dutch mezzo-soprano singer Jannie Pranger made available to me some time ago and of which a few have been electronically manipulated. These two components are tightly interwoven and form an exciting, multi-layered and multi-faceted musique concrète.

The everyday sounds are treated in the same way as the vocal sounds; for example, in the way one deals with the sounds of percussion instruments, which are also largely noisy. A drum roll, a cymbal crash, a rattle ... or an electric saw, a creaking door, shattering glass, the impact of a golf ball, a swarm of bees, etc. The mezzo-soprano voice involved is extremely varied. Snapping or hissing sounds, whispering, speaking, singing, whistling, blowing and every conceivable sound that can be produced with the voice are included. 

Earth is the only planet known to date that sounds; where we are constantly surrounded by sounds and noises produced by humans and animals, wind, water, etc. I wanted to represent and celebrate a tiny section of this unique sonic diversity of planet Earth in my composition. The word “maa” in the title is the Finnish word for earth/land. 

The composition Klanglandschaft/Soundscape Maa was selected by the international jury of the SONIC PLANET competition and will be published on the DEGEM CD 25.
