- Gareth Dunlop and Kim Richey to release "The Nashville Sessions" EP on 5th of May.
 
- EP includes two songs recently heard on US TV series "Nashville" (ABC / Channel 4) and another in "Bones" (Fox / Sky).

Kim Richey and Gareth Dunlop first met in early 2013 for a songwriting session. Dunlop says, "The first time I met Kim was to sit down and write a song in Nashville... I was a bit nervous!  What came out of that first meeting was a great friendship and a song called "Keep Coming Back", that was later featured in the TV show Nashville.  Since that time we’ve written the five songs that came together to make this EP."  
 
Richey adds, "I loved writing with Gareth from the very first time we got together.  There was an immediate musical connection, and we laugh a lot - always a good thing." 

Their diverse backgrounds may at first seem an unusual combination.  Dunlop was born and raised in East Belfast and became one of the most talked about young musicians in Northern Ireland. He was offered a publishing deal after his very first show at the famous Bluebird Café in Nashville and has gone on to make Nashville his second home. Gareth's songs have since been featured in numerous television shows ("House", "Cougar Town") and the film soundtracks ("Safe Haven").

Richey, born in Akron Ohio, is a two-time Grammy nominated songwriter who has released six critically acclaimed albums over the past two decades.  She has written two US #1 singles, had four others hit Top 10 and her songs have been recorded by Trisha Yearwood, Mary Chapin Carpenter, James Morrison, and many others, as well as contributed backing vocals on albums by Ryan Adams, Shawn Colvin, Jason Isbell and more.

So perhaps it's apt that, since Nashville brought these unique talents together, the EP be named in honour of "Music City" and, in turn, the TV show some of these songs inspired.

We recorded this track ourselves at our guitarist Ben's homemade studio in Bristol, England. 

The idea of the song came one morning during a cycle commute into central Bristol in a queue of traffic sat alongside Arnos Vale Cemetery.  It's a  Victorian cemetery, that has partly reverted back to nature.  From the late 1980's, people acted together to conserve it, fighting off the threat of developers, amongst other things. Now it's a haven for nature within just a mile or so from the city, right next to a busy main road.  https://arnosvale.org.uk/discover/heritage/friends-history-arnos-vale/ 

I learned about the urban farming movement in Detroit, Michigan a few years ago. (e.g. http://www.miufi.org/). It's amazing how communities there have transformed urban spaces into places to grow vegetables, after big business & the motor plant came & went.  


Motor City

So this track was inspired in equal parts by some art and some words. After being at an amazing exhibition about the air around us and the skies above us, I was walking along listening to the ‘Meet the Composer’ podcast, and Laurie Anderson said the following:

“You can go and get a $20 ukulele and make an incredible piece of music from it, it depends on you, it’s not the tools you’re holding… …so the best thing you can do is make your music, and look up at the sky and appreciate the astounding nature of the world”

It not only resonated with feelings from the exhibition and its subject matter, but also with recent thoughts on the idea of constraints in music making - particularly using fewer elements and focusing more on the immediate materials to hand. In this regard I was also a little bit inspired by Matmos, who often make tracks and records using one or two sound sources, and who also talked on this particular podcast episode.  

So it seemed fitting to try to write a piece of music today, inspired by the air and skies, using only my cheap ukulele. Every sound in this track is made with it (apart from the vocal snippets, which are samples of Laurie speaking on the podcast.) It was made very quickly as I didn't want to dwell on it. Whilst being far from 'an incredible piece of music', it was an enjoyable and interesting exercise in incorporating rigid limitations, and in trying to express myself within these boundaries.
