The Truth is hard

In September of 2024 I got to play with @shubostar, one of those artists whose music I've been listening to and weaving into my sets for years. Such a treat! 

To offer appropriate direct support, I voyaged to explore what 'cosmic disco' (a genre that Shubostar identifies with) sounds like through the lens of Asymmetry. As it always is with music genre re-interpretations, my set sounds nothing like the classic definition of 'disco' and maybe only somewhat 'cosmic' -- but I am so thrilled with how it turned out and the crowd absolutely loved it 😊

The set begins gently and ramps up over time, traveling through midtempo, indie dance, bouncy house, and other sonic flavors I'll pass on trying to put into words (--but send me your words!!). It's also filled with warm guitar sounds I adore 🎸
The energy is upbeat and dynamic, and I've been enjoying listening to it when I need to focus (e.g. working or driving) or to bring warm groovy ambiance into a space (e.g. hosting friends) ✨

Love love love to find inspiration in different corners of the music world and to be influenced by the artists I admire.

Berlin-based duo Brigade returns with their sophomore effort, having spent the intervening years refining their approach to sample-based composition. Where 2022's "Hard Times, Soft Music" established their credentials as purveyors of comfort food electronics, „Unlimited Dreams Corporation“ finds the pair digging deeper into the archives, constructing elaborate sonic collages from decades of discarded vinyl. The fictional corporate framework, a company peddling bespoke dream experiences, works as an aesthetic guide, appropriate for 2025.

The fourteen tracks unfold with the patience of bedroom producers who understand that the best plunderphonic work happens in the margins. Brigade layers found sounds and field recordings with careful restraint, creating pockets of warmth that invite repeated listening. The broken beat rhythms feel lived-in rather than showy, while the more ambient moments provide necessary breathing room. It's headphone music that rewards attention without demanding it, the kind of record that reveals new details months after initial discovery.

Wie seid ihr dazu gekommen, elektronische Musik im Downtempo-/Midtempo-Bereich zu spielen?

Malü: Ich war auf Veranstaltungen und fasziniert davon, dass es bei diesen Sounds nicht um die härtesten Drops geht, sondern dass Spannung aufgebaut und auf gewisse Art “gehalten wird”. Besonders intensiv war dieses Erlebnis bei einem Set von Niju im Peer23. Das ist leider auch das was mir in der „Downtempo/Bounce“-Entwicklung der letzten Jahre komplett fehlt. Vielfalt, Storytelling und Spannung.
Kalypsoul: Ich komme aus der Livemusik. Während der Pandemie fiel alles weg, und ich wollte musikalisch weiter kreativ bleiben. Über die Arbeit in einem Musikhaus habe ich Malü kennengelernt. Es hat sofort Klick gemacht, und unser gemeinsames Projekt war geboren.

Gibt es einen besonderen „Downtempo-Moment“, den ihr mit uns teilen möchtet?

Malü: 
Da gibt’s unzählige! Besonders war mein erster Downtempo Gig zusammen mit Arturo beim Bummelzug in der Villa 2017 in Heidelberg. Außerdem der erste Liveauftritt mit Kalypsoul auf dem Konfusius 2022, aber auch die Gigs auf der Fusion, dem Zugvögel oder den hier veröffentlichten Gig vom Mystic, das war einfach magisch!
Kalypsoul: Ich erinnere mich an unsere erste ‘Live Probe’ unter einer Eisenbahnbrücke in Mannheim. Oder das Live-Set von Niju auf der Fusion 2025. 

Welche Gedanken und Gefühle verbindet ihr mit diesem Gig?

Malü: Ein perfekter Sonntags-Sonnenaufgang, viele grinsende Freunde im Publikum, bester Sound, null Technikstress. Kalypsoul und ich haben uns einfach nur angegrinst, uns aufs Spielen konzentriert, Sekt-Mate getrunken und den Moment gefeiert. Es hat sich danach wie der schönste Live-Gig ever angefühlt, weil alles einfach so gut funktioniert hat.
