The guys from BBNG asked me to reinterpret their track "Signal from the Noise" from their new album. And because I don't let myself be asked twice by a damn good band like this I put the synth on my piano, pushed the record button and followed the flow of the great idea to interpret a song before it was even released.

From “Made By Desire" to "Remade By Desire": The Uncanny Valley label from Dresden, Germany curates a remixed and reworked version of the debut album by local pop heroes ÄTNA and takes us on a trip through various styles of Club Music, electronic Pop excursions and music college Rock’n’Roll.

When ÄTNA sent the German pop world and beyond into rapture with their debut album "Made By Desire" in 2020, the Uncanny Valley crew was also very excited by the duo's life-affirming pop concept. Soon, the idea of a cooperation came up. Since both the band and the label operate from their base in Dresden, contacts were quickly made and the first meeting was so productive that the plan for a collaborative remix and rework album was soon turned into action. Uncanny Valley put together a selection of stylistically diverse artists that took account for the various influences in ÄTNA’s music and reflect the multifaceted sounds of the Uncanny Valley label cosmos.

After the initial idea two years ago, "Remade By Desire" is now an album that puts the ÄTNA songs into new musical context, but sounds surprisingly coherent given the stylistic diversity of the artists involved. It's as if all the musicians had attended a studio retreat for a week and experimented with what is possible when you mix their respective skills. The result is a true crossover album that takes us from edgy techno over orchestral ambient to jazzy punk and challenges without overchallenging.

It starts with Perel, who has conquered the music world from Thalheim/Erzgebirge during the last years and turned "Won't Stop" into a high-energy club anthem suited for festival and club floors alike. Raster mastermind Byetone remodels "Touch My Fantasy" into a bittersweet robot ballad, while RAKANS transforms "If You Were Gone" into a percussive techno banger with musical hints to his home country. Grown up in Beirut, he lives in Dresden now and causes a stir in the Uncanny Valley and beyond with his Rawmantique crew. Also working in Dresden is Moritz Simon Geist who combines Inéz’ fragile vocals with elements from minimal music in his version of "Touch My Fantasy". The duo Olicía from Dresden and Berlin use their classical trained voices to create a dramatic arrangement for their chamber music pop gem that is "As Fast As I".

Martin Kohlstedt’s and Panthera Krause's epic version of "Ruining My Brain" has almost symphonic characteristics, while Berlin's AB Syndrom turn "Touch My Fantasy" into a stripped-down but irresistible pop song. The album concludes with two rock songs by Dresden based bands Die Arbeit and Bahnhof Motte, one comes as a classic cover song with post-punk influences and the other one as a kind of art punk inferno with free jazz attitude.

Martin Kohlstedt is a German electronic musician, pianist, and film composer with a particular approach to production, where his pieces “are always in movement and never resort to a definitive form – even during concerts.” For his latest album, titled FELD, Kohlstedt has produced a series of films complimenting the singles [you can watch these on his YouTube video collection], with the entire production culminating into “a movie with an immersive, captivating story.” For today’s premiere, I’ve selected the track “DIA”, which, even without the visuals, conveys his flavour of modern electronic sound fused with acoustic instrumentation, projecting the motion of emotion as it flows throughout your mind. The piece opens up with soft piano sparkles wrapped by a blanket of rhythmic glitches until the whirlwind of edgy electronica whisks it into action of wide-angle cinematic soundscape. “This is possible because Kohlstedt, while trusting the clarity of composition of his modules and pieces, intuitively allows unforeseen events that he also sees as an integral part of his live performances: a certain fragility, constant searching and possible failure, a dash of chance and unbridled flow.”

Happy new year everybody! I'm starting this new Messy Mix season with a musical journey provided by one of my favourite artists: Mr. Martin Kohlstedt. His set is such a fitting, meditative start for the beginning of the year that I just had to immediately share it with you, once you all recovered from your NYE party hangovers. 

This mix is fittingly titled “In The Beginning” and it perfectly suits the current mood and that special storytelling approach of Martin’s music I’ve always loved. I can’t put into words how honoured I am about him taking part in this project. But, obviously, he found the right words and here’s what he said about his selection:

“This music mix blends soundscapes, film scores, and ambient pieces, capturing the essence of a world beginning to form as the new year unfolds. It mostly features tracks I created, with a few guest contributions, and incorporates cinematic compositions that add a narrative depth. The mix spans an hour of deep, dark winter vibes, evoking the quiet intensity of early winter and the sense of a story unfolding. This passage of time feels almost suspended, as if everything has frozen in place, amplifying the stillness and quiet tension of the moment. Gradually, however, things begin to stir, and a slow but inevitable momentum starts to build, as the world begins to thaw and move once again.”

There’s nothing to add here, really. Thank you @martinkohlstedt for your work on this one, your music and also the important environmental work you do besides it. Martin is back on tour this spring and these shows are always amazing, unique experiences so make sure to get a ticket for them. He’s also very entertaining and such a sweet guy on and off stage. May this mix give you the needed energy to start 2025 in the best possible way.

Martin Kohlstedt is a composer, pianist and producer known for his work in instrumental music and electronica. His albums, including Tag and Nacht, Strom, Ströme, Flur and Feld, along with their respective reworks, have earned international recognition and led to global concert tours.

Kohlstedt’s music blends electronica with acoustic and analogue elements, incorporating classical piano, ambient sounds, field recordings, and score design. His work is characterised by the seamless integration of diverse influences and soundscapes. Whether performing at festivals, in intimate piano concerts, or creating movie scores, his music is dynamic and immersive, evolving in real-time during live performances.

He describes his approach as modular composition, where his pieces are never fixed. Improvisation plays a key role in his process and he values audience interaction, the freedom to experiment and to collaborate with people, spaces and contexts. Throughout his career, Kohlstedt has worked with notable partners such as the Leipzig Gewandhaus Choir, artists like Douglas Dare and Sudan Archives and labels including Warner Classics. In addition to his own compositions, he creates music and scores for films, plays, podcasts and audiobooks. Kohlstedt also runs his own label, Edition Kohlstedt that supports a reforestation project near his hometown.

Caro C Biog
Caro C is an artist, engineer and teacher specialising in electronic music. Her self-produced fourth album 'Electric Mountain' is out now. Described as a "one-woman electronic avalanche" (BBC), Caro started making music thanks to being laid up whilst living in a double decker bus and listening to the likes of Warp Records in the late 1990's. This 'sonic enchantress' (BBC Radio 3) has now played in most of the cultural hotspots of her current hometown of Manchester, UK. Caro is also the instigator and project manager of electronic music charity Delia Derbyshire Day.

Intuitively Martin Kohlstedt feels his way through this body of wood, felt hammers and steel strings. The composer is rigorously working on himself and pulls his listeners into the undertow. It just doesn’t get more personal than that with modern classics.
