Exclusive: Real J - Rhodes That (WXTFX002)

Emotional Rescue and Jamwax return to Capo Disco with the first ever-official release of a holy grail of the Caribbean disco sound.   Fully licensed and remastered especially for this release, there is now no requirement for badly pressed rip offs.  

While little is known about the Crashers, all leads point to an incarnation of the revolving “house” band of Glen Adams.  As often the case, the floating nature of Jamaican born labels, rhythm sections naming and renaming to fit occasions was endless.

Running out of his Brooklyn studio, the otherwise known Outerlimits, Capo And The Crew or even possibly Crashers, the swinging reggae meets funk grooves are apparent.  Led from the desk by label owner, producer and writer, Glenroy Adams and co created a 12” that covers bases in one release.

While funk bass, chopped guitar, harmonica and vocal harmonies created the Caribbean flavours of Flight To Jamaica, they cloud Capo’s closest assent to the disco sound he was tapping in to.  As NYC shifted towards the fresh block party sounds of hip-hop it should be remembered those early parties were in essence disco and funk records cut up, looped and rapped over.   

With the over-used grail tag worthy of the A side alone, the flip itself has become a funk-bomb that pushes dealer prices to the heavens.   Featuring the unknown Lamour on vocals, it’s as much the female harmonies, slap bass and guitar solo mixed with stabbing piano and drum breaks that make this short, but sweet ‘skank’ a worthy collectors item in it’s own right.

While Capo Disco was just a yearlong sub label, the breath of style, optimism and intent is obvious.   As an archive mission, Flight to Jamaica being removed from the bootleggers hands is justified, but sitting in the middle of 3 killer 12”s rewinds of Glen Adams vision, it should be seen in a broader spotlight.

Munich Label Jazz & Milk have got 003 in their Twelve Inch Jams series coming up and its by the founder of the label himself, Dusty. Word is he's taken up the MPC to discover a new workflow and refresh his approach to music, with the end result being this cut of wonky acid disco.
“Brick” starts off on a disco tip, before it slowly dips & weaves into a muscular 303 bassline groove and then heads up into a brief relief of swinging deep chord bliss.

London-based producer Harry Wolfman is quickly racking up quality releases with his 'Portal Gun' EP as his latest offering landing on the prolific Toy Tonics imprint. 

Clearly a fan of Rick & Morty, Wolfman's 'Portal Gun' EP features tracks titled 'The Rickest Rick' and 'The Accord'. Here Mixmag premieres the latter, a soulful and funk-infused house ballad that shimmers with fluttering synth chords and a warm bass line.

few days ago, something special happened at the end of a show in France where I was playing b2b with mamene S3A.
the sound engineer, waited for the place to be empty and just played this beautiful track for the staff and the artists packing their stuff and it had a really strong effect on me. something beautiful, out of time, lost in a little snowy village, this song I know since I was a kid sounded different and affected me.
the funniest part of the story is that S3A did a France Gall edit few weeks ago to pay his tribute to this wonderful and talented artist, thanks to him for opening the road.
here it is, only three days after the show cause it feels linked to that moment for ever to me.

After many happy years of playing this amazing, raw gospel number out as a personal dj "weapon" I thought it was time to share my edit with you all so I've given it a brand new makeover, road-tested it and I think you're gonna love this! 

I have many fond memories of seeing people dancing and losing it to this way back when, early 2000s at La Via Lactea. Nobody knew what this stuff was back then (gospel disco/funk?!) but nobody cared either, people just came to dance. It's gratifying when you get your own homegrown scene, lots of records from those days seems to be coming into their own now, which is great, but what was cool then was that nobody cared -  about what anyone else was doing elsewhere, just enjoying our own thing in complete freedom. Good times!
