Ancient Stones of Kernow is an arts based project which focuses on the prehistory of the far west of Cornwall, in the very southwest of Great Britain. As a part of the project a body of music was written to highlight the atmosphere of the areas landscape. The seminal musical work of the project The Cornish Soundscape ‘An Ancient Land’ was expanded into this major stage work the ballet ‘Mid-Summer Rituals’. This has the summer solstice practises of the neolithic inhabitants of the Zennor area of west Cornwall at its heart and centres around their ceremonial monument ‘Zennor Quoit’. Which still survives in the landscape today. The work consists of 2 acts each of which is made up of a sequence of atmospheric narrations and theatrical dance episodes.

Martyn Jackson studied flute, saxophone and piano at the Royal College of Music London and has for over thirty years pursued a career as a performer and music educator. Recently returning to serious composition he has written the music associated with his project 'Ancient Stones of Kernow' which focuses on the prehistory of the far west of Cornwall. He works from his music studio in St. Ives which has recording facilities and is equipped with Logic Pro X and Sibelius software along with Kontakt and Vienna Symphonic sound libuaries, with a full size Oxygen 88 keyboard.
