EOS Radio - marum ◍ Invited by One Instrument

The Sun and the Moon is a research on music, dance, pleasure and grief.
 
A sonic tale developed during the twisted Summer of 21, dedicated to Mariana. 
 
This piece blends recordings from a Rogue Moog modular synth and some smaller hacky Error synths, Tingsha and south Chinese bells, spoken word, and field recordings. A mashup of elements recorded during rehearsals and dances, singing and wailing, protesting and mourning.
 
The score is a clamour of admiration, experimenting with techniques used by artists such as Eliane Radigue, Steve Reich, Catherine Christer Hennix, Microfilm, Lawrence English or Delia Derbyshire, whose listening, looping and distortion techniques have created incredible scores, often times using sound-objects, concretism or pioneering electronic instruments. Listening harmonies meshed in the chaos of sound, finding patterns in the randomness and orchestrating beautiful noise. In music I tend to find comfort in idle noise as a cushion for the thoughts - it fills the space which would be occupied by undesired noise or voices while it massages the organs. Intertwined with acousmatic sounds - a needle-drop, a synth or a plane, crickets and faulty instruments, listening to a film in the backdrop while falling asleep on the lap of a friend. The rhythmic beats and claps in club music set a dance pace but the arrhythmic frenzy of sounds and noise are the spices of music, modulating sounds, creating density and narratives which make us high - on the dance floor, in a bath or listening to our headphones. These are the sounds I am constantly searching for and that I yearn to include in my sets to generate weight or lightness.

marum is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, writer and DJ based in Berlin whose practice and research focuses on queer rave culture and its implication on social and urban politics, collective care practices and harm reduction, digital privacy, feminist hacktivism and technoliteracy. marum is a founding member of XenoEntities Network, a collective doing artistic and curatorial research on queer, gender and feminist studies and their interactions with digital technologies. In Lisbon, marum is co-founder and resident of the queer rave collective mina, and co-curates suspension, a music label and series of events exploring fringe communities and sounds. Marum was the initiator of the cultural association Rabbit Hole, an artistic platform working with performance and visual artists since 2011. Marum has presented their work, curated programs and participated in talks internationally under the invitation of museums, film festivals, galleries and universities. As a DJ, marum blends fast paced hard rave, techno and trance influences with deep, ambient and alien soundscapes. marum has studied in Lisbon in the field of healthcare and women’s sexual health, and later studied media art in a co-joint master’s program across universities in Austria, Denmark and Poland.

Finally putting out this recording of last year’s set at Waking Life - it's been a quiet spell for me recently, but following the closure of Planeta Manas feels good to break it with this release.

Playing between Nídia and Cormac, I was faced with a mood and genre-defying challenge, ending up playing from 80 to 170bpm including polyrhythmic drums, gushing psychedelia, conjuring both luminous and ominous soundscapes. Graced with a critical mass of enthusiastic stompers getting lost against the most beautiful sunset at Praia stage.

Thank you WL for inviting me to play, and thank you Ivan for inviting Planeta Manas crew to attend this year - a sweet moment to replenish our energy to say farewell to our planeta.

Thanks to everyone for the flattering words and who convinced me to release - my dear friend and agent Keira for the encouragement and patience, to my bug in crime Sasha, the amazing sound and light technicians, some sweet strangers at the festival, and in particular Sybil, the most prolific mix maker whose dedication to craft is ever inspiring.

The 10th episode of VANTABLACK at Rádio Quântica counts with a guest mix by Ciarra Black, a Berlin based DJ via Brooklyn, producer and co-founder of the No-Tech label and event series.

Ciarra moved to New York in 2012, having since then performed live at countless venues, highlights of which are MoMA PS1, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Smart Bar Chicago, Output, and several Brooklyn warehouse spaces - sharing bills with the likes of Headless Horseman, Drew McDowall, Varg, Young Male, and Antenes. Since she moved to Berlin a month ago, she's already on her heels with a gig at Tresor for Grounded Theory Berlin and prospects to play all over Europe in the following months.

With a background in punk and noise music, her live hardware sets are one-of-a-kind improvised soundscapes - rhythmic and noisy, visceral and heady, channelling her influences past, present, and future into a sound that is truly her own.

For the 2nd hour of the show, I've picked one of my favourite works by Eliane Radigue.

The 9th episode of VANTABLACK at Rádio Quântica​, with a guest mix by Luz, DJ, record collector, and the founder of Room 4 Resistance, a berlin-based queer femme forward collective, with its next event this Friday, November 10th in collaboration with the Polish party Brutaz and the London-based Siren. The 2nd hour of the show is mix by marum, echoing mina.

Room 4 Resistance is a Berlin-based queer femme forward collective focused on community-building and creating safer space & visibility for underrepresented artists in Dance Music. R4R runs parties, hosts radio shows and curates panels to promote women, gender queers, non-binaries, trans, black and POC artists, to explore the political dimensions of the dance floor, and to create bridges between different communities. The residents are Luz, rRoxymore, Doc Sleep, Yuko Asanuma, LMGM (Luis-Manuel Garcia), DJ OCCULT and Nazira.

The 8th episode of VANTABLACK at Rádio Quântica​, with a guest mix by Isabassi, a Brazilian electronic music composer and DJ based in Berlin, and in the 2nd hour a selection of tracks by marum.

Isabassi is highly influenced by the industrial and rough sounds surrounding her life in Sao Paolo and the German capital, performing in clubs became her initial way of expressing these sounds, before she focused on creative and production skills. Always exploring different ways to move body and soul, her sound is a weaving of strong cadences and dark intricate textures.

For the 6th edition of VANTABLACK at Rádio Quântica, after a very fortunate coincidence, they've met in Lisbon and Berlin, marum has invited Cashu to talk about her various projects in São Paulo that now echo internationally. 
Cashu is a DJ; co-founder of MAMBA NEGRA, a resistance party in São Paulo that gathers a lot of women, queers and POC for incredible raves; co-organizer of RáDIO VíRUSSS, an independent radio of electronic music; and last but not least, her eco-rave conscious project of recycled jewelry NÓIA RARA.

Martinou had his debut in 2014 with the 'Needless / Procedure' single on own vinyl imprint Sewer Sender, followed by a double-EP 'Deep Sea Seated Concrete Solid' at the end of 2016 and a debut on Brittish label UntilMyHeartStops in 2018. Martinou's music balances on a fine line between the conventions of house and techno and are masked by a veil of mystery, where billowing pads and crooked rhythms dig past common or garden variety club tracks to offer something more sublime.

Risen to prominence from the Lisbon's underground scene as a resident of mina's infamous raves, marum has crafted a unique and hybrid artist practice: relentless rave DJ and community utopian-researcher. Instigator of the queer rave mina (Lisbon), co-founder of the label and artist platform suspension (Lisbon/Berlin), a knit-tight collaborator of the hybrid dance & sex party Lecken, co-founder of the queer feminist & science and technology platform XenoEntities Network, and collaborator of WHOLE, marum holds a refined and thoughtful sonic and political signature that moves entire communities and dance floors. Their sets are unashamed worship sessions of hypnotic, acidic techno, cavernous industrial beats with elements of EBM, trippy trance waves with aerial drones that take influence from film scores, minimalist composers and musique concrète. Experienced in various dance floors around the world,  their sets oscillate between meditative soundscapes and fast-paced high-energy ravey tracks, inducing a contagious physical and mental catharsis, manipulating the realms between anxiety, peace, and ecstasy.

Our Streaming From Isolation series is now raising donations directly for Black Lives Matter-affiliated causes. Donations to this stream go to NAACP Legal Defence, a US civil rights organisation that fights for racial justice through litigation, advocacy, & public education.

As part of Streaming From Isolation series, @Ballantines has committed a fund in the form of 20 grants to be distributed to community-driven collectives around the world. These grants will be given to each collective to distribute as they feel best to support under threat artists and those most in need within their immediate community. This support is critical over the coming months whilst COVID-19 restrictions are in place and impacting many artists’ ability to do what they love and to make a living. Weekly takeover days of Boiler Room’s channels will feature performances and sets programmed by these collectives from isolation. Broadcast to the world from artists’ homes and private spaces, these transmissions are a way to stay connected while apart.

INFINITY RUG proposes to create a platform where sound, collective learning and intimate care come together to forge a space of togetherness within queer, trans and BIPOC communities during the period of the pandemic. The rug invites us to take off our shoes and enter a domestic, familiar and intimate space. The rugs, provided or brought by the participants, delimitate a space that suggests the comfort and intimacy of home, a place for resting, loving, grieving, playing, meditating, sleeping. Their portability allows us to bring the domestic space into the public and to weave them with other rugs, creating a wider surface, an intertwined network of safety pods that can accommodate sanitary and hygienic demands while still forging hypothetically infinite connections with our rugs. Closeness across distance. Domesticity in public.

The series Infinity Rug was initiated during the quarantine in the form of small home listening gatherings, weaving various elements of ambient and deep mind music, spoken word, field recordings, ASMR, somatic and sonic healing, textiles and textures, scents, performance and moving image. For each event, invited artists are challenged to use various elements to orchestrate a regenerative environment for all those participating.

NOTE
If you are planning to host a listening pod make sure the rugs are clean and have at least a 1.5m radius to accommodate one or two persons, or bigger if accommodating larger groups of the same household. Ventilate the space regularly.
