While on tour this past year with Ms. Lauryn Hill, I had a crystallizing conversation with one of the back up singers Tanikka Charrae. Tanikka is a super smart, focused, talented singer-song writer in her own right and on a flight she shared with me the song that inspired this mix. 
As soon as I heard the combination of her voice,the music and the lyrics/theme I was instantly moved. No Hard Feelings is a song about letting go of a romantic relationship that didn’t work out but unlike most music that recounts lost love with overly dramatic bitterness or self pity, this song leads from love and forgiveness.
 From a lyrical standpoint it’s mature AF! Plus it’s just a bop! 
We talked about the apprehension, as an artist, around publicly sharing work when things don’t seem “ready” but really it’s us not ready to be vulnerable....
Vulnerability,accountability,self love and 
awareness in the personal and political are some of the sentiments expressed throughout the songs on this mix.
It’s a collage of some of my favorite music and culture makers who as black women have undeniable voices and perspectives.

Jesse Boykins III is a Soul artist from Chicago, later relocating to Miami and finally Brooklyn . His first EP, Dopamine: My Life On My Back EP was released February 14, 2008 and his follow up The Beauty Created LP was released November 25, 2008 through NomaDic MuSic, a partnership between him and long time friend and New York Giants wide receiver Sinorice Moss.
Jesse’s career in music began at the age of 9 when he joined his school choir. He soon began auditioning around Miami and found himself recording with various local Miami artists. In High School Jesse was invited to perform in the Grammy Jazz Ensemble and recorded a full length album with them.
After high school Jesse was recruited to The New School University in New York City. At The New School Jesse perfected his skills as a writer, performer, arranger and producer and as a vocalist. He also studied with classical trainer Kamal Scott and Universal recording artist Bilal.
