'Long Ago and Far Away' is a CD recorded with Mary, Graham Bickley and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Richard Balcombe and releaed on Naxos. The songs featured are unreservedly romantic and written by great songwriters, predominently from the 1920s-40s, including George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington, Rodgers and Hart and Cole Porter.

BERLIN CABARET SONG by Friedrich Hollaender dating from 1928 - the height of the golden era of Berlin Cabaret and the final years of the Weimar Republic. The english lyrics by Jeremy Lawrance playfully unfold a story of prostitution, cheating lovers and lesbianism.

04 O just suppose

When Kurt Weill left Berlin he eventually settled in the USA along with so many other composers and performers of the era. He had a very successful Broadway career and this song from "One touch of Venus" is a great example of his edgy, unsentimental style that was so much his trade mark back in Berlin when working with Brecht.

I'm a stranger here myself

A song dating from around 1921-24 written by Mischa Spoliansky and Marcellus Schiffer. A witty text about the joys of transvestism - this was an era of sexual discovery and diversity. English Lyrics by Jeremy Lawrence.

09 Maskulinum-Femininum

A feminist anthem written for lesbian performer Claire Waldoff by Friedrich Hollaender in 1926. This is from the CD TELL ME THE TRUTH ABOUT LOVE and is arranged by Philip Mayers.

I grew up with this song as it was one of the very few pop singles my parents had. What a great song! This is from a live performance with backing vocals by Sarah Lark, Abbie Osmon and Graham Bickley condicted by Richard Balcombe.

A great song that The Carpenters saved from Mr Bacharach's bottom drawer!
