Here's a mix I recorded for the Aritzia stores and it pretty much sums up some of the classics of the parties I've thrown in Montreal over the years + some hyper-girlie tracks that were mandatory in the mix. Large spectrum of type of music. Sorry about the sound/stereo problems. Hope you'll like it!

Feb 2008: I recorded a 10 minute mix with 7 tracks which presents the sound that is taking over Bailes in Rio mixing funk with Bahianese rhythms of Macumbinha or with Samba rhythms. The last track of the mix is even mixing Funk Carioca with Forro! This proximity between the tamborzao and this rhythms from the Nordeste can be quite easily explained by the sociology of Cariocas Favelas inhabitants. A large part of the population of favelas in Rio are from Pernambuco and other areas from Brazil north-east. www.masalacism.com

Created in 2006 by Dj Sénateur with the track “Balani Show”, the sound of Balani is the pure Malian electronic product of mixing machine drums, balafon and totally insane remixes to make the youth dance, whether they are in the neighbourhoods of Bamako or in the remote bush country with no electricity. Balani has been spreading through tens of sound systems that gather DJs, MCs and producers – among them, DJ Mo, the highly famed protégé of Amadou & Mariam.
Balani is quickly evolving at the same pace as new technologies reaching Mali, a landlocked country eager for computers, Internet and social networks.  Young people are now exchanging sounds through their mobile phones and DJs are remixing them with software brought to the country by young volunteer toubabous. Traditionally held at the core of the village under the baobab tree, balani parties have moved towards more of a digital sound with the appearance of drum machines and CD mixers which have made looping and live remixing of Malian, Zairian or Ivorian coupé-décalé hits possible. 
Despite Balani’s rapid spread, the role of the DJ and his MC have stayed virtually the same as the griots’ from back then – set masses on fire with praises and demonstrations of power, and, of course, collect the financial gratifications that come along. The balani DJs, the bush DJs as they call them, often travel long distances on impassable roads to celebrate weddings, baptisms or any other major Muslim celebration, making little ones and grown-ups dance until the wee hours of the morning...

The Danbé Project: Masala gets involved in Mali
During his first trip to Mali as a volunteer for a community radio, Masala blog and radio show founder Jean-Philippe Émond discovered Balani through DJ Diaki. Together, they set up The Danbé Project, with the intention of preventing rural exodus among young people in the area of Koulikoro, Mali.

 The Décaler Balani EP is a collection of exclusive tracks from two local leaders of this project, DJ Diaki and his apprentice Lamine Traoré, a.k.a DJ LT, an incredible MC and unrivalled drum machine “hitter”. It’s the first ever Balani compilation.  All profits of The Décaler Balani EP and launch party will go to the second phase of The Danbé Project. More info at www.projetdanbe.com
