KMC Feat. Dhany – Somebody To Touch Me (Hi-Lux Remix) Champion Records 1995

After the enormous reaction to the first Hi-lux Remix for Champion (Red Eye – Kut It) Champion A&R Head Johnny Walker (one of the Original Ibiza 4) straight away saw the impact that that first Hi-Lux remix had on the dance floor (and the records sales figures) so asked for another Hi-Lux remix of ‘Somebody To Touch Me’ before the first Hi-Lux release of ‘Feel it’.

Yet another Piano Dance track which needed a Hi-Lux remix to freshen up. This was 95 and by now although still a strong foundation for dance music, ‘piano house’ was moving out of the late 80s/early 90s scene and was starting to become a bit of an ‘Korg M1’ dance pop overload.

This was such a great vocal to work with and a full ‘song’ rather than just short samples which was a first and a new challenge. I decided to flip the arrangement on it’s head and break away from the norm whereas you’d have traditional verse/breakdown/chorus songs, ‘Somebody’ I knew was such a strong vocal and had the potential to withstand a fresh new arrangement approach…….. my thinking was to keep the track sparse through the intro and build up and then give the verses all the space by having them in the breakdown.... this style then became a Hi-Lux remix trademark.

B1 Brennan - It's Time

Butter Side Up’s 12th release, Weekend at Raymond’s Place’ comes from San Diego’s hotly tipped John Manhard. A densely textured and unpredictable six-track EP whose languid groove and swing will sound equally sweet warming up a dancefloor or late into the following day. 

Based in LA and resident of cult party V:isions, John’s been on a roll of late, with releases on the likes of Mui Mui, Perfect Timings & InTheBagg (alongside Dylan Payne) cementing him as a singular producer with an impressively broad reference board. 

The EP’s first track, ‘Shake Your Body’ immediately gets under the skin, a bouncy groove and synth-line pulling you under its command. Over the next 30-odd minutes the spell doesn’t lift - deep house tropes twist and turn playfully over shuffling breaks and swinging basslines, reminiscent of West-Coast house’s finer moments. Manhard’s studio-craft and ear for the unpredictable give a fresh perspective to a much revered and distinctively Pacific-coast sound.

This is music for the fuzzy margins either side of peak time. It’s fitting that Hamish first met and heard John’s music at a hazy afters in LA back in 2022, drawn to a selection of tracks which were largely his own. Two years later these ideas have refined to form another stellar release on BSU, complete with original artwork from Max Binski and scheduled for release in early Ocober.

Nothing but nice returns with the fifth slice in the series from co-head honcho James Andrew. Doing what he does best, the record showcases his distinct blend of house, tech house and garage with a bit of dubby deepness thrown in for good measure. Nicely!

James Andrew - Surfin The Buzz (NBN005)

With releases on Brooklyn’s Major Records and UK imprints Non Stop Rhythm and Indulgence, DJ Split is a breakthrough producer putting his own stamp on the classic Chicago house sound. For his Shadow Pressings debut he has conjured up five original club cuts that will work their magic on any dance-floor worth it’s salt. Last Night Baby sets the tone with taught 909 beats, punchy bassline stuttering vocal hits. Piano chords and a smattering of melodic chimes and just the right amount of musicality without taking away any of the raw energy and turbo-charged grunt. Treading a similar path but upping the BPM’s, XNXX goes for the jugular with gnarly FM bassline and frenetic groove. Flip over for Can I Tell You? which goes a little deeper with a rolling bassline, filtering Detroit pads and strings whilst Step For brings touches of acid, banging 909 toms and vocal chops. Closing out the EP we have One In A Life Time which turns up the jack factor with snappy 808 snares, mechanical bass line and deep stabs. DJ Split is a man on a mission to bang the party and has come prepared with his piñata fully loaded with big, fat beats n basslines.
