After an overwhelming start with the illustrious artist Cuttlefish & Asparagus, who did an immense job both on Black Sun’s homonym and Ish’s “Don’t Stop", KALAKUTA SOUL Records come back with another deep set of disco gems, touched by the hand of one of the most respected heads of the genre. Glasgow’s disco godfather, the almighty Al Kent, has delivered three eclectic masterpieces, due to take the international dancefloors to a further level of musical consciousness. A further pack of deep dug bombs that confront the functionality in music many labels have always strived for. The A Side keeps every imaginable sound system busy with a drifty percussive harvester adorned with an eclectic instrumentation that splits flesh from bones and mind from soul. “Colder Than Cold” on the B Side is a perfect example of how a dancefloor should sound like. A thick bassdrum, a bass slapped by the fingers of a giant, keys and chords from heaven and horns hailing from the utmost depth of Kalakuta’s soul. Bringing you back to where it all started, the almighty Al Kent does an immense work on an evergreen, you might have bumped into as a munchkin. “Gee Wiz” closes this opus with a orchestral beauty that once gathered all the souls behind what we call music today. “Freddie’s Groove” is Crackazat in full-on jazz mode. The nod to Freddie Hubbard is clear, and Crackazat cleverly takes ideas from both the jazz legend and his legendary French sampler, Pepe Bradock for this track. The horns are deep and moody, the groove is jazz-house at its best and Crackazat’s soft vocals have the perfect amount of fragility to fit the groove. The changeover into a stabby synth section halfway through the track is a subtle reminder from the skilled producer that – even with all these musical elements – he can direct you to the front of the dancefloor with the twist of a note.

Brussels-based producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ, Edouard Gilbert aka Kuna Maze, has been steadily making his mark on the contemporary electronic music scene over the past few years. Delivering collaborative projects for the likes of Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM (Test Press Club), Lyon’s Galant, Parisian label Cascade and of course Tru Thoughts where he makes a welcome return here following his ‘Débuts’ LP alongside Nikitch in 2020 and their 2022 ‘Back & Forth’ LP.

Sundries has already established the now well-known "Disco Goodies" series, with the fourth VA compilation in a row featuring obscure disco and boogie gems that cater to diverse tastes and occasions. This series is dedicated in memory of Juan Vargas aka Sould Out who sadly passed away 2 years ago. This 6-tracks EP kicks off with "Soul Driven Dynamics" by Berobreo, which opens dramatically, setting a curious tone as it builds tension, leaving us anticipating a resolution that arrives unexpectedly in the form of a loose, seductive soul sample cut.
