Soul Clap’s Charlie aka Charlie Soul Clap preps his UTM debut with an all out edit dream for Roy Davis Jr.’s elusive label.

For fans of Soul Clap and Roy Davis Jr. alike, the second release since Undaground Therapy Muzik’s relaunch will feel at home in their library. The new EP by Charlie Soul Clap comes in the form of a rhythm focused 4 track take — comprised of 2 A’s with 2 B’s that take a deeper focus on the first track on the release – Virgo’s Victory. The world has been closed for long enough, so Charlie and Roy felt it was time to refashion living rooms as dance floors and introduce something you could have a gentle afternoon or late night boogie too. The EP cements Charlie’s solo works as a clear ode to disco and classic house music.

The EP is being released on the 21st May worldwide. For everyone to enjoy. There may be a vinyl press when the record shops are open around the world again, but for now – this will be homed on all your favourite streaming sites, and of course, the UTM Bandcamp.

Charlie stands with two feet firmly planted on top of a mountain named Soul Clap and yet he points further into the sky with a look of mischievous excitement. Somewhere, deep on the horizon, the mystery of his musical journey will unfold. Charlie is devoted to following in the footsteps of those who have paved the way before him and continues to churn out thematic dance music that is routed in tradition but is eclectic, unexpected and contemporary edging into the future. As a principle songwriter for Soul Clap he has worked with artists like George Clinton, Nona Hendryx, Louie Vega, Laid Back, Amp Fiddler, Robert Owens, Sa’D “The Hourchild” Ali, XL Middleton, Midnight Magic, Lee Curtiss, Martin Buttrich, Wolf + Lamb, Nick Monaco, No Regular Play, PillowTalk, Navid Izadi and on and on.

Label boss Archie Hamilton returns to Moscow Records with his first EP of 2021; a 2-tracker, following his hit Resurrection EP on sister-label Moss Co back in November 2020. The record opens with Journey To Juno, and ethereal stomper with old- school sensibilities. The groove thumps along with cosmic hooks that interact with each other beautifully, tied together with super tight 909 hats - 4am dance floor bliss. The B side is a far sleazier affair. Percussive grooves meet a driving acid line and evil vocals that sit menacingly in the shadows, twisting and turning into Midnight Delight

The quality of sampling in music, like DJing, is often decided by tasteful selection and arrangement rather than heavy processing and editing. This is something noticeable in some of the best modern dance music, and Parisian label, Sampling As An Art, is certainly close to warranting such description.The label, headed by S3A, is set to release a four-track record of – to use what’s no doubt become a trite joke – sample-heavy music deserving of praise for its genuine artistry. Each track of this EP is quite different to its company, and we reckon we’ve landed the best of the lot for our premiere: the A1 tune by Sweely, Dollar G.

Lively percussion persists with full musical force during the whole eight minutes of this jazzy, house number, introducing itself in tasteful layers throughout the opening part of the track until a bass and piano, with quintessential jazz timbre, slide in smoothly.

Almost four minutes in we realise where the song was headed all along: toward a soulful female vocal harmony that lifts the music up another level and keeps it there until the end.

A second track of this quality could justify a two-track EP. Luckily, the other three are almost on par, we think. Bogota’s Felipe Gordon adds some acid-jazz fusion, before a daft-punk-style Pnom Pen remix and a stripped back, sax-samples-and-all cut from G2S round off the record on the B side.
