Solma - Dry

Story behind this mix: 
I had less time to practice for DJ retreat than normal this year and I was organizing a set for sunset. Ended up last minute having to make an entirely new crate to take on closing us with some uplifting and beautiful energy. 

I had set this strong intention for a few months while digging to tell a story with words, around love and the beauty of life. Starting with the darkness and tension we feel and moving to the beauty behind life that is available for us all to touch. 

That morning I threw some crates in a folder, fastest most unorganized I have ever been. Didn't practice these tracks or set at all. 

Over the night I had this sense that rather than start where my mind told me... to start with a track I was going to play in the middle. It was scary to think about starting in that sonic area but it felt right. 

I started with the track and it felt as if each track selected itself, the keys worked perfect fror what I wanted to play and was speaking to me through title of track and the words in the tracks. I heard messages In these tracks I've never heard before culminating in the last track which says "we can win!" 

Ultimately the energy of this mix feels like my internal reaction to the moment humanity is in. A dark night of the soul, tension and a hypnotic focus on the chaos of the moment which then moves to action and ultimately beauty. This is in some ways the pulse of the climate fight and the fight of humans now to move from fear driven selfish actions to coming together as one around the beautiful future of tomorrow. 

Playing this set was cathartic for me in a way I've never felt and I offer gratitude to be able to help this message come through as it feels like something else was speaking it through me and my intention to be a messenger. 

Anyway, much love, had to write this somewhere as the meaning of this set for me personally is beyond profound. Lets go make the solarpunk future of tomorrow and lets do it as one!!!!!

This is one of my most-requested live recordings in a while! For 4 days at Fusion, ~80,000 people grow a tail and run free in the German forest. It’s what happens when uncompromising art collides with anti-capitalistic freedom. I was invited to play on Saturday night from 2:30am-4:30am on Fusions biggest stage, Turmbühne. Soundtracked by heavy, intense psychedelia, this is a story of moving everybody from the darkest hour straight into sunrise. I wanted to push people’s limits, but I also wanted it to be fun. Thank you to those still standing and especially to the Fusion crew.

For RA.1000, DJ Sprinkles' first mix in over a decade is a powerful meditation on the genocide in Gaza.

Dance music often relies on simple narratives: release, escape, unity. But those narratives can often feel inadequate, and even at times, hollow. Or, as Terre Thaemlitz might bluntly put it, just "shitty."

For her first mix in around 15 years, Terre Thaemlitz AKA DJ Sprinkles, challenges us to think differently. "I felt this 1000th podcast should reflect the moment in which it was made," she told us in her Q&A.

And what is this moment? Every day since Israel's 2023 assault on Gaza began, an average of 28 children have been killed. That's an entire classroom, every day, for over 600 days (at the time of writing). It's a staggering figure that only captures a fragment of the listless cruelty imposed on the strip.

Faced with such a genocide, what can music really do? How political can it truly be?  For their RA.1000, Thaemlitz gives us an unflinching rebuke to the idea that music should provide escapism. The mix weaves ambient fragments and jazz passages, woven around samples from Israeli media and the voices of outspoken Jewish critics like Gabor Maté and Norman Finkelstein. 

The result is not just a protest, but a document of our time. For Terre Thaemlitz, music is never just music. Her RA.1000 serves as a reminder that in an age of relentless suffering, the most political act is to reject the illusion of escape, and search for something greater.
