Mass Appeal Presents: Soulection's LAKIM (Mix)

Big Dope P dropped a VIP of Project Pat‘s “Wat U Talkin Bout” as the lead track in his BBC Radio 1 mix last week, and today we’re premiering the rework in full. Big Dope P’s remix ups the speed of the original, a cut off the Three 6 Mafia co-founder’s Pistol & A Scale (Chapter 1 Omerta) project, reinforces the drums, and slides a couple vocals clips into the mix. Dope P told us over email that “the track was the intro of the BBC Radio 1 mix, and as a lot of people asked me about it, I’m giving it for free download. I’m a big fan of Project Pat and basically anything Three 6 Mafia related. By the way, someone from the posse may or may not be on my next record :).”

PREMIERE: Big Dope P X Project Pat - "Whut U Talking Bout" VIP

This past summer, young creatives were invited to The Sprite Corner in New York City to watch Wale, Metro Boomin, and the Highbridge Voices choir create a track from scratch.

From the jump, Wale let everyone know they were being treated to an exclusive experience, as he’d never opened up his creative process to such a large group before. However, once Wale and Metro Boomin settled on the direction of the song, it was almost as if they completely forgot about the crowd, experimenting without reservation. The Highbridge Voices choir brought an additional layer to the experience, adding haunting harmonizations to Metro’s production.

Hailing from Los Angeles and currently based out of Santiago, Chile, producer Brian Gibbs writes tracks under a number of aliases spanning a myriad of genres, including techno, dubstep, and drum and bass. His work under the moniker Gunjack (@gunjackofficial) focuses on the realm of juke and footwork. (Gibbs is also the head of Chilean juke record label Repotrax, and has previously worked with footwork originator Traxman, and shared bills with Teklife’s DJ Spinn.)

Today, we're premiering Gunjack's "Is It A Crime," a cut of the forthcoming third volume of Moveltraxx's Street Bangers Factory series. Gunjack previously appeared on the first edition of the series with "Dangerous," and now he returns with a collaboration featuring producer DIRT. The two first met on tour in California a couple years back. Gunjack tell us over email that "DIRT traveled specifically to Santiago to finish the track." Gunjack and DIRT flip Sade's "Is It A Crime," looping the original's hook and add footwork flavored percussion under.

It’s a cold jungle out there. Instead of the tropical air hanging over Jamaica, stinging winds gust through the streets of Brooklyn. This is the setting that @Uninamise brings to mind with “The Jungle,” a track he’s premiering here from his new mixtape, Fate Of The Wolves.

Heavily thudding kicks bang out a dancehall pattern while a melody trickles out, echoing off icy walls, and chopped Bounty Killa samples are caught off the radio waves and trapped in empty streets. The record, like the whole Wolves tape, is a flex tune—a local style of music that came up within Brooklyn’s flexing dance culture. But some of the producers from the scene have recently started eyeing wider audiences beyond the dancers and now use the acronym FDM, short for flex dance music, to represent this new stage.

PREMIERE: Uninamise "The Jungle" Riddim

While Drake’s opening restaurants and setting jump balls, Rob GF (@CallMeRobGF) brews in his engineer’s basement in Hillcrest, writing violent epistles aimed at his detractors. “Statue,” produced by DRO, jams a razor blade into the main vein of Toronto hip hop and watches the blood spew. Imagine a somber piano playing while you’re being lowered into the ground, a priest in Stüssy rattling off razor-sharp bars for your eulogy.

“I wrote ‘Statue’ to quiet the hype of what's currently being praised in Toronto,” says Rob GF. “Music is easily manufactured today and most of it sounds the same. There aren't enough people applying their own unique styles to what they create. 'Statue' is also a reminder that I am still out to say, ‘Fuck you and fuck the industry.’

“I also want to add in that Toronto is a hotbed for talent, but not too often does the true unique talent have light shed on it as well.”
