As a prelude to the album The Soul Tapes (to be released on 13 May 2016), Billie Ray Martin releases Strongheaded Woman as the lead single - an epic tale of a Las Vegas slot machine addict seemingly meeting her Rhinestone Cowboy, only to discover that he’s just another cheap hit and run sleazebag.

The single includes the Mooli remix of the album track The Glittering Gutter – a song about the downfall of Billie's place of upbringing, the red light district of Hamburg. The Mooli remix adds the kind of darkness that typifies some of Billie's output over recent years. Mooli have taken an already epic track and given it the Portishead treatment, complete with soundtrack style strings.

Billie has never been easy to categorise. Clearly a soul singer, her career however has seen her mostly as a pioneer of house and electronic music, most notably her groundbreaking work with Electribe 101 and her seminal hit Your Loving Arms. Her explorations have led her further into the worlds of ambient music and drum & bass among other areas of electronica.

Her new album The Soul Tapes is a ‘first’ for Billie: no electronic music this time. Billie realised her long-held dream of recording an album that is equally influenced by Hi-Records (Al Green, Ann Peebles, Willie Mitchell) as it is by ’60s garage records. It is also not devoid of a certain country twang, and even Bo Diddley peeks through the door on one song.

Billie Ray Martin and producer/writer Jon Tiven were introduced in New York in the mid ’90s and had started drafting the odd song, together with Sally Tiven. Further writing sessions followed, until it was decided that there was an album of songs worth recording.

Booked into New York’s 900 Broadway Studio, Jon and Billie were thrilled to find themselves working where Keith Richards had recorded his first solo album. Under this omen Jon Tiven brought the musicians in, not least world famous drummer Simon Kirke. Jon’s credits include albums produced for Wilson Pickett, Bobby Womack and Willie Nelson as well as numerous awards and Grammy nominations.

It was not until 2014 that the opportunity arose to mix the album, re-record many of the vocals, add production and instruments and determine exactly the final sound of the album. The results are convincing and powerful and show once again Billie’s refusal to conform to trends, preferring as she does, to create them.

Sumerian Fleet is a trio formed by Dutch producers Alden Tyrell and Mr Pauli, joined by Zarkoff after their 2010 debut EP. Their second EP came out in 2012 followed by their debut album ‘Just Pressure’ on Dark Entries in 2014. Sumerian Fleet have returned to release their sophomore LP ‘Pendulum’ of all new material as well as a remixed version of “This Game Has No Name” from Zarkoff’s other band, FFFC.

‘Pendulum’ contains 80’s Dark Wave/EBM inspired tracks with an industrial tinge. The band cites inspiration from musical acts Fad Gadget, Front 242, Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy. Literary references come from Poe's ‘The Pit and the Pendulum’, Pelevin's ‘Generation P’ and ‘Life of Bugs’, as well as classic Cyberpunk like Gibson's ‘Sprawl’ trilogy.  Sumerian Fleet deliver 8 songs of vintage dark electro with a Gothic tinge and a touch of bass guitar. The album's been put together in a way that the listener can connect the dots, create a narrative, and become immersed in this attitude that the band’s trying to convey, such as Vigny's idea of accepting despair: "A calm despair, without angry convulsions or reproaches directed at heaven, is the essence of wisdom." 

All songs were initially recorded at Mr Pauli’s studio in Den Haag, with overdubs and additional recordings at Zarkoff’s Sensorium Studio in Croatia, and then final mix downs at Alden Tyrell's studio in Rotterdam. The album has been mastered by Alden Tyrell and EQed for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP is packaged in a copper foil stamped jacket designed by Eloise Leigh, with abstract squares in varied rhythmic repetitions to indicate motion, and included a double sided 10”x10” insert with lyrics and notes.

Massive Ego formed in 1996 with original members Marc Massive and Andy JT. Marc ex model and dancer for Boy George’s 90’s Jesus Loves You band, DJ and art event curator has fronted the band from the beginning. The band were originally at the centre of the short lived new romantic revival scene in London called ‘Romo‘ which culminated in a glowing half page live review by journalist Simon Price in UK music mag Melody Maker.
Over the years, with many line-up changes Massive Ego have played the length and breadth of the UK at clubs and festivals including shows at London’s Finsbury Park and Trafalgar Square and in Europe. The band have seen several single and album releases in the UK (Klone / Public Disordar Recs) Germany (ZYX) as well as releases in the USA (Ninthwave Recs), Belgium (Black Leather Recs), Japan (Avex Trax) and Australia (Pro-DJ). Massive Ego tracks have featured on well over 40 compilation albums from the labels above.
Originally known for their new wave pop sound, all that changed in 2013 when Marc Massive became more interested in the darker ebm/industrial/goth scene and from this point all new material reflected this change.
Early 2013 saw Marc supply lyrics and vocals on a track called Dead Silence by Lia Organa & Electric Prince and was released through Belgian label Black Leather Records with a brilliant video by Polish film makers/artists Suka Off and a remix package including The Horrorist and People Theatre. This single was followed up by the Low Life EP with Empire State Human.
2014 and work started on a new EP called Noise In The Machine, with remixer and producer Lloyd Price involved in production. With the track’s completed Marc secured a remix from Daniel Graves (Aesthetic Perfection) and sent the EP off to a couple of labels. 2015 saw it released on Out Of Line music with lead song I Idolize You also featuring on their hugely successful Electrostorm CD compilation Vol 6.
The EP has had great reviews from the likes of Side-Line Magazine, Brutal Resonance and Storming The Base websites. The EP entered the Deutsche Alternative Chart (DAC) at #10 and the German Electronic World Chart (GEWC) at #13.
A track called Low Life (Zarkoff Remix) was featured on a new vinyl release called Synth Wave Vol 1 released in May on new label Electro London Records. a new track called Out Of Line featured on Electronic Saviors Vol 4 released on Metropolis Recs.
2016 they celebrated their 20th anniversary with live dates at Infest UK, supported Blutengel at Das Open Air Concert in Chemnitz and Out Of Line Weekender in Berlin. The band also recently remixed Blutengel, OST+Front, and CHROM. 2017 saw the band release their long awaited album Beautiful Suicide on Out Of Line Music and toured with Blutengel on their Leitbild Tour and performed at Wave Goth Treffen, Amphi Festival & Whitby Goth Weekend.
